So, I broke down and finally bought a Tikka T3 Lite (since the T3x’s are out now, the T3s are on sale most palces) in .308 Winchester. Put a Nikon Buckmaster II 3-9x40 scope on it and a sling. It’s been bore-sighted, but I haven’t shot it yet... it’s cold and windy this weekend :P

I suspect I’ll kill much more paper than deer with this, but that’s another reason I got the Tikka instead of one of the super-cheap American rifles, it’s just a nicer made and fitted gun, and the accuracy is reputed to be extremely good, so some long-range target shooting won’t be an out of line activity. It’s understated, but the bolt shroud, receiver shape, barrel taper and stock combine to make it quite elegant and modern, I think.

Gunlopnik is fun. I’m going to buy a rifle in a few years. Ended up spending more my on handgun then I was expecting

I spent more than I would have liked to on the first gun I bought myself as well. My granddad had given me a gen 2 Glock 19, that was my first gun, but I always wanted an HK. So when I graduated from college, I used the money I got from that to buy an HK USP compact.

Nice! I have been shooting a lot recently. Ammo is expensive!

Tikkas are awesome. A buddy of mine had a T3 .223 Varmint (1-in-8" twist) that shot 3/4 MOA with match ammo all day long. The bolt was smooth and the trigger was damn near perfect from the factory. My only complaint is how expensive the plastic mags are, and how they’re single stack when the design would easily handle a double stack.

I would love to get the fiance a Kimber in a few years(once we get settled)but she can shoot my 9mm pretty well. I probably do need to go ahead and get a deer rifle sooner. Venison would be a good, less expensive, substitute to store bought meat . Maybe sell some for project car money if I have extra.

Composite lightweight .308 bolt - you’re cruisin’ for a bruisin’, I take it. On the shoulder, I mean. Of course, I know somebody who’s heavily accessorizing a Savage and seems to like it...

Lovely. I need to do some Gunlopnik posts. I definatley shoot many more papers than anything else.

.308 is pretty cheap... By high-power rifle standards.

Nice rifle. I think that a quality firearm like that will probably last the entire hunting career of a normal shooter. I went with Ruger’s American Predator. .308 is definitely my choice rifle round. So cheap for its capabilities.

I never kill deer, only paper, so I air rifle. But a real rifle is just so much more accurate that I’m considering an upgrade

I’ve just been shooting a lot per session, and been going with my dad, and then also co workers. I’m getting .223 around 30 cents per, but that adds up fast. I’m not sure what I’m spending on 9mm but I’m shooting a lot less of that.

Yeah, my shoulder is always blue and yellow the day after I take my 308 CETME to the range. Fucker kicks like an angry mule even with the H/K HD buffer.

I have a high-end PCP air rifle too. It’s a .22 Eun-Jin Sumatra. It’s a tack driver at 50-yards, but the ballistic profile of pellets is pretty crap by 100 yards... I can group under 4-inches at 100, but that’s provided it’s still air. Then again, the cost per round savings is significant.

I’m already looking into replacement butt-pads. The one it’s got is pretty deep, so something squishier is quite possible without bottoming out.

I’ve got an Iver Johnson 12 gauge which, being a single, smarts a bit. Night and day contrast with the 16GA Auto 5, which basically has no recoil.

Congrats on the new gun.

I love my 308, it’s an excellent round. In a light bolt action it’s not fun to shoot a ton through, but an excellent performer and a lit nicer than a magnum round. I can only put about 3 boxes through it in a sitting before I’m sore as hell the next day.

Mine is an A bolt in 308 with an older Bushnell 4x12 scope (back from when they made good optics). Shoots well under moa with match ammo in it and moa with hunting rounds. I paid a lot for it when I bought it (wow, like 12 years ago) but it’s a reliable shooter.

I took a whitetail at 350 yards with it once. Took me what felt like a lifetime to pace that sucker out while walking to the deer and counting.

That’s my hope. I ranked the American Predator #2 in my budget range after a lot of dicking about in the gun shop, but the fist stage of the trigger bugged me, the Tikka’s bolt is much smoother and the Ruger stock just feels....cheap... I mean, I know it’s composite, but the Tikka stock feels (and sounds) less hollow and insubstantial. I like my Rugger SR22 a lot though.

Thanks! Yeah, I really like 6.5x55 as a range-round with good hunting capability, but 308 is so much cheaper and readily available and a great performer overall. Its also easy on bores so a good .308 should be essentially eternal. Hell, three boxes is a good chuck of change, so it’s just as well you’re done after that ;)

right. I have several pellet guns, one that pushes .177 at over 1000fps... but it’s all irrelevant when even the best pellets are aerodynamically poor.

oh yeah, cost per round savings are ASTOUNDING. that and I dont have to go anywhere, backyard or basement. plink all night long

Yeah, most deer I’ve taken are under 100 yards, and all but one under 200, but it’s a hell of a round. On top of it the round can take any game in North America.

I’ve probably put a couple thousand rounds through mine with no loss in performance or accuracy. That browning action is smooth as butter still. Any time I cycle a bolt action that’s the gun I compare it to and very few hold up at even twice the price.

I only own the 1 A bolt though because $800 is a pretty steep price to pay for something like a 243.

Yep, a penny a round is hard to beat. I use mine mostly under 30 yards in the backyard. The hardest part is getting the sight aligned just right...even if I can group rounds under 1" at 30 yards, everything is different when I’m shooting straight up into a tree at a squirrel. Which reminds me, I still need to clean that carcass out of my neighbor’s yard so he doesn’t freak out. I put two decent-sized holes in one a couple days ago and it fell on the other side of the fence.

Adds up, but prices seem to be falling a bit. At least some of the common handgun loads I guess.

Word. I have always liked the T3. Such a great rifle out of the box. I traded in a defective rifle towards a used Predator. It already had a Timney trigger (ridiculously smooth) and Nikon ProStaff scope, so that sold me for $500ish.
