Kinja'd!!!

Someone explain to me the following...

Camera lens on my cell phone and I am certain your cell phone too is ROUND

Why does it matter which way I hold my camera when taking pics or videos. The result should be same since camera is round.

Instead we have the eternal war

Kinja'd!!!

Wouldn’t it make more sense to have the option to modify the end result to have it in either portrait or landscape?

It would be the shape of the sensor right?

Kinja'd!!!

Because the sensor isn’t round or square. They’re rectangular.

The lens is round, but the sensor is a rectangular array.

You can still post process to convert one to the other, you just end up cropping the video, and losing resolution.

The sensor is generally speaking a landscape-oriented 4:3 rectangle.

why can’t the sensor be square?

It could be, sure. But what has a square display? With a square sensor, you’d be guaranteed to be losing part of the image on every screen you viewed it on when viewing fullscreen.

hmmm..

my tv is landscape.
My pc monitor is landscape
display on my desk phone is landscape
only my stupid phone is portrait. As such it should be taking images and videos by default in landscape even when holding in portrait.

No, your TV display is rectangular. PC monitor is rectangular. Desk phone is rectangular. Your phone is rectangular. Just the orientation is different. If you don’t like it, just rotate your phone 90 degrees when you take a picture.
