Kinja'd!!!

I saw this banner that was put up in the hall outside the break room and couldn’t help but laugh at the very premium high five graphic. I appreciate the sentiment though. Much better than if it said GET BACK TO WORK YOU FILTHY RABBLE.

As a graphic designer, this banner is making me physically uncomfortable.

I have an employee who I regularly ask how his foot is doing...the first time, he was like “uhhh...fine, why?” I replied that he kicks so much ass that I don’t want him getting a repetitive stress injury on his foot. Cheesy, yes, but it got a laugh out of him, and he appreciated it....I think...maybe he’s just humoring me and silently cursing his lame boss’ ‘dad jokes’.

That makes you sound like mirror-universe Lumbergh. Rather than being dully awful unintentionally and dragging people down, you’re being uplifting in a dull and awful way.

Those banners aren’t cheap either. Whoever designed that thing was being decidedly un-awesome

It’s certainly not something you’d see in Britain.

Our British way would be to see a sign like that as taking the piss and wasting money that could be better spent around the office.

But that’s the difference between U.K. and U.S.A.

U.S.A. = ‘hey we can do this, we’re awesome, we can make this awesome and it will be awesome, yay’ ((high fives and smiles and cheering)).

U.K. = ‘Okay Pete, what’s the job? Okay, I’ll get started’.

Lol.

That’s exactly what we say when our company does these things.

Being as I work in HR and know who put up this banner, our company generally tries to make employees feel good about coming to work. This is cheesy, but happy employees are productive employees.

Lol. In my place that would piss a few people off royally.

In the U.K. some would also see it as sarcasm.

This is a mix of genuine earnestness and a naivete of why folks like me with dry wits would find it so amusing.

I work for a British company in the US, and things seem to be a weird mix of American and British corporate culture. All our top management is American, but my past two employers were sending us on some sort of retreat or sales meeting pretty much every quarter and just generally didn’t care about spending large amounts of money on team building and engagement type stuff. The new place does none of that, the attitude is just do your job, and we’ll let you know if we have a problem with it, otherwise assume its fine. We don’t even do weekly conference calls, which I’m really liking.

I work for an American company in the U.K. but thankfully they stopped doing all that chant and clapping crap early on.

See, that’s the British way, ‘leave me alone to get on, let me know if something isn’t right, but if you don’t, I’ll assume everything is fine and I’ll keep doing what I’m doing’.
