Especially those of you who’ve driven one of the turbo trims. Teach me about it. Is it genuinely fun? Any aftermarket support? Even slightly competitive within it’s segment? Reliable?

drove my friends turbo a few years back. not a fan at all. not nearly as much aftermarket support as you would hope, it was just meh to drive. the gas pedal being hinged on the wrong side annoyed the hell out of me too.

hinged from the bottom like a go kart instead of from the top the way its supposed to be

I knew a guy who had one. I never rode in it, but he never had a problem with it and there’s some aftermarket support. He lowered it and put a front mount intercooler on it. He said there’s aftermarket turbos for it, but they were to expensive for him. Overall he really liked it and he used to be a mechanic so it can’t be to bad mechanically.

You mean like a Porsche.

Technically hinged from the bottom isn’t the right way, any racing pedal box will feature a bottom hinge. Having the pedal actually hinge instead of swing offers more control.

I love the Veloster*.

It was the very car that got me into cars when I was 20 years old and looking for my first car! Back then, all I wanted was the NA Veloster because Turbo was too expensive. 4 years later, I go in the showroom floor where they displayed a newly delivered Rally Edition. I took it out of the front doors for that car’s first ever test drive. Just an amazing car. If you go through my profile, I have written an oppo review of the Veloster Rally, and another article defending the Rally from enthusiasts who knock it before they try it thanks to its association with the less exciting NA Veloster and Turbo Veloster. I seriously recommend if you get a Veloster, that it be one of the 1200 produced Rally Editions. It has the best suspension, wheel & tire package, lambo paint, and comes with the R spec’s B&M short throw shifter and weight savings. The Rally and R Spec are closer to 2800 lbs, while regular Turbos can top 3000 lbs with their tech package and huge pano sunroof. Also, I would agree that a regular turbo was not that fun to drive. So it isn’t that people are wrong about the Veloster exactly, but they might not have an updated opinion after trying a Rally Edition. Anyway, read my review if you wish to learn more about the car.

I have a 2013 Turbo. My oil pump broke at 18,000km, and held down the valves of cylinder one leading to catastrophic failure of the short block. The piston head seized and the rod smashed a hold through both sides of the block. Also totalled the transmission. It’s never ran as well since the new engine and transmission. Dealer’s been pretty decent but I’m looking to get rid of it this summer. Speakers have developed a rattle multiple times, and key fob has had issues. Get a Ford ST/RS. The Veloster has very limit aftermarket support, and even more limited in the “good brands” section. It’s a cool car, but kind of a let down too.

I looked long and hard at them 2 cars ago. Great kit for the price and you can’t beat the unique factor. In the end I ended up passing on it because it just wasn’t good in snow (even with decent winter tires), some of the blind spots were a bit weird for my seating position and the Mazda3 I ended up getting was just better. The Veloster was a car I really wanted to love but it just wasn’t as fun, engaging or even felt as quick as the 2010 mazda3 hatchback I ended up with.

I liked driving one. I see them as 2004 GTIs with a warranty.

Buy at your own risk. Owner reviews and CR have not been as kind to them as other turbo KIA/Hyundais for reliability.

My best friend used to have the lower trim turbo veloster. It was quick, but I thought it was a bit under braked and the beam rear suspension was dated throw back to one of 80's Honda’s less desirable traits. Combined with the funky looks and Korean car interior materials, it struck me as something that would be fun as a rental car. As a new car to own, it struck me as a 90% solution in which buyers remorse would eventually set in. Down the road, they might be fun when for kid when they can be picked up for a few grand.

I think the biggest problem with the Hyundai Veloster is the Ford Fiesta ST. I actually love the design of the Veloster, but couldn’t come up with any compelling reasons to actually buy one over said Ford, especially since new the Ford is cheaper. Used...well, that’s how I ended up in a BMW.

Slower than an FR-S, and not nearly as fun to drive. While the rally might be an all around better car, the standard Veloster Turbo is basically junk, when you consider what other options you have in the same price range.

I like the styling of the Velostar... I really do. The one thing I cannot get past is the “Hyundai” part. I still remember people having problems with Hyundai cars back when they first started selling them around here, and that has tainted my perception of them. Is this an accurate assessment of current Hyundai quality? I doubt it. Is this fair to today’s Hyundai? Probably not. Am I going to buy anything with “Hyundai” on the hood when I have other viable options? Doubtful. However, my prejudice against the brand is my own burden to bear. I am reading other’s comments about the neat little Velostar with much interest!
