My dad had one, it was blue. 4 speed manual. He used to try and fit 3 or 4 of us kids in there at any given time. I was never comfortable but we always liked it because we were stupid kids.

Then we got a Buick Lesabre wagon....brown. It had rear facing seats that my mom had to crawl back to with the rest of us if we wanted to make it up steep hills in the winter.

35o buick. 3 speed auto. The roll down rear window was cool. It lived long enough to see itself become the villain. It didn’t run great, but it was the first car I ever drove...long before 16...it started running better after it caught fire. My dad lent it out to a guy who helped invent the CD but got canned and none of the credit due to corporate asshattery. He needed it more than we did. He later tried to burn his house down with the family still inside. Desperate times. He died in jail I think, but was awarded an academy award posthumously for his work in digital sound. They put a big dent in it but we eventually got it back when a job rolled around for him. At one point we had a decent patch of sod growing on the roof in a box we made and it also had polka dot spray paint hub caps (neon colors, so 90's).

We then had a 1989 suburban

Kinja'd!!!

K1500 350 with 3 speed w/overdrive. stock everything including the rear AC unit which hung down from the ceiling. My dad put stiffer leafs in the back to fix the sag, but I think he just never realized the rear wheel arch is lower than the front so its just a trick of the eye. I remember getting out to lock the hubs for him when it was snowy. Worst steering, worst brakes, worst ride. Cool though, and I loved the interior. I remember him telling me it had fuel injection so it should start everytime. It mostly did and I found that amazing for some reason. We got it stuck in some clay at the beach and it was hilarious watching them try and get it out. My dad gave it to some guy to repaint and it took...wait for it...two years! My dad was a soft touch and it didn’t take much of a sob story to gain his sympathy. He had a lot of friends though.

We had Ford conversion van for a while. My dad hated it, my mom hated it. We got stuck in Donner’s pass in a snow storm in it once, we watched clue on the tv. I’m not sure why we bought it. It had dual tanks and BIG comfy seats. My mom plowed into the back of a few parked cars when she looked down to pick up something that fell of the dash and that was the end of the van, and the only Ford we’ve ever owned.

We went back to Suburbans with a 93 light quasar blue k1500

Kinja'd!!!

(like this, but a suburban...couldn’t find the color)

I don’t remember this one aside from being gutless and blue. So blue. oh and leather for the first time. it was so fancy.

After that we went k2500 (1997) with the Vortec 454

Kinja'd!!!

Yup, that one. 33 inch tires on 16 inch wheels that...it turns out crack in half if you hit a rock at highway speeds...it originally had a brush guard with driving lights on it.

Kinja'd!!!

but some punk kids stole it and they tried to ditch the brush guard to make it stand out less, but in doing so they cut the wire to the 9th injector so it ran lean and did some ugly things to the engine. It was a 3.83:1 “economy” rear end and had no trouble hitting its 99 mph limited top speed. This thanks to the vortec centrifugal supercharger with intercooler and 3 inch to 2.5 inch headers/exhaust my dad installed as part of his “build or buy” midlife crisis thing. It made about 5 lbs boost at our altitude and made for effortless passing, and using up of the 45 gallon tank of premium. I remember one time in Lake Havasu we tried to fill it and the ski boat up at the same time (it also required premium) and the fuel bill was so huge they thought it was a fraudulent charge and they stopped mid pump until my dad called the card company to get it worked out. That was a day before his colon burst and he had to have surgery in lake Havasu hospital for colitis. We had to leave him there because he couldn’t drive home with us and we all had school. My mom flew back and forth as needed until he recovered. that was so weird. We sold it and its being used as a farm truck now I hear.

After that it was pretty much Toyota highlanders, since the family had moved out by then and a huge car was no longer a necessity.

And now you know.

Whaddayaknow, my parents also had a blue Skyhawk (an ’83 or maybe ’84 wagon). And later on, they had an ’89 Suburban, which became my first car when they upgraded to a ’93 model. How about that.

If your dad bought the Pontiac, this could have been your Suburban

Some one tried to sell me a Ford Conversion van like that today, a high roof with a bed, and “crazy sound system”. I passed...

I saw a five-speed transmission for a Monza at the swap meet yesterday.
