New liquor laws in BC took effect a few days ago, and now every business except those that target minors, and those that operate out of motor vehicles can apply for a license.

Want a beer while you wait your turn at the barber? Go ahead. Want to serve guests a complimentary drink at your hotel to enjoy on their way to their room? That’s fine too. As for whether the number of grocery stores that can sell beer and wine has been expanded, I don’t know yet.

For all the bad the provincial government has done, this is pretty damn great.

Here’s some celebratory Toro y Moi

So will Oppo now operate a club house in BC?

I guess if I get a business license, and my “Serving-It-Right”, I could apply for a liquor license. The physical clubhouse would be the hard part...

Awesome. I didn’t know you had restrictions on EtOH there before. Down here in Dallas, we had a patchwork quilt of dry and wet precincts until a couple years ago when we finally voted the county wet. The southern religious groups fought against it bitterly and claimed demon drink would ruin our fair city, but the apocalypse they predicted hasn’t come. And I can buy my beer with my groceries now instead of having to drive to the precinct line and visit a store with bars on the windows.

I’d always envied Quebec because you can get beer and wine anywhere, only liquor is restricted to liquor stores. Also liquor licences can be had by almost anywhere. We’re finally not far off from that. Plus, some form of marijuana legalization is supposedly on the horizon, though we’ll see how badly the federal government handles that....

Forgive me for not having paid attention, but I thought your federal government was more left than ours and would be more 420 friendly.

Oh very much so, but they’re unlikely to let the current fairly illegal independent grower and dispensary method continue, even though they’re the ones that deserve the benefits of legalization, in my eyes. They’ve been keeping at it for years while some of them go to jail, I don’t want to see liquor stores or pharmacies come out ahead of them, and whoever other big companies are pressuring the government to let them distribute legal weed.

You’re in Dallas? I’m in Austin. I thought you were somewhere in the Midwest. About 15 years ago, I went to an air show at Alliance Airport in FW. I went to get a beer and they asked me for my club card. My what? I could have purchased one on the spot, but it wasn’t worth it for an overpriced beer. What a racket though.

Ha! I thought you knew. I grew up in the Midwest, but I’ve been here for 16 years. Yeah, I first encountered that weird club workaround when we moved here and I wanted a glass of wine with dinner. I can’t remember if I actually paid for the card or if they just gave it to me, probably the latter. Then they put me in the database. Worth the bother since I was living here. Most restaurants paid lip service to the rules. After all, they wanted to sell their booze. Finally enough Northerners moved down here to join with the drinkers already here to vote the county wet in a referendum. All our grocery stores immediately sprang wine and beer sections.

I’m sure it all boils down to money. I grew in VA where beer and wine was sold everywhere but liquor was only in state stores. Visiting family in PA a couple of years ago, I had to buy beer from a restaurant to take back to my hotel. The restaurant had convenience store coolers in it. It was weird.

That is weird. Every state seems to have a strange set of rules. In IN, you couldn’t buy on Sundays, and kids couldn’t come into a restaurant where they could be in line of sight to the bar. But you could buy liquor in the drug store. Go figure.
