Kinja'd!!!

Stopped by a local Korean restaurant for dinner. The menu did say that dinner came with 15+ sides, but I didn’t expect them to literally mean 15+ sides - surprise! Not bad for a $12 meal.

Man, that looks good. The side dish thing is pretty normal at restaurants, but 15 is more than I would normally expect.

Same here, but it will all be at home. My mother is an expert in Korean and Vietnamese cooking, to the point where she was offered a position as a chef at a new Vietnamese restaurant. When I lived in California I loved going home for a visit because I would always leave with a gallon of homemade kimchi.

No Asian blood in my family, however - we’re a bunch of European mutts. Odd...

Exactly. I’m used to two or three, but 15+ was a bit much. Tasty, but too much.

yeah, banchan is pretty much in the same vein as tapas; small shareable “tasting” dishes. good stuff.

it’s kind of like tapas. a bunch of small, tasting dishes. we (Americans) think of “appetizers” as one big shareable dish. Tapas and Korean Banchan are a bunch of little dishes where everyone at the table can pick and choose what they want to try.

I re-read my comment; I meant to say it’s pretty normal at Korean restaurants. I am Korean, so I’m no stranger to banchan.
