Poor Mazda is going to be hurting even worse here soon. Hope they don’t give up and leave me with two orphaned cars with zero resale value.

Dammit, did Trump actually get an import tax rolling?

It’s in the works. He pulled us out of the TPP and is “renegotiating” NAFTA. They’re saying 5-20% taxes on products made in Mexico, which includes a ton of Mazdas. They make them there and in Japan.

Their sales keep tumbling and now this. I wonder if I ought to get my wife and I into different vehicles before ours end up worth nothing like modern day Suzukis.

I’m glad to be Canadian (until whatever tariffs on Canadian products appear).

Basically, our president seems to think everything in the world should be made in America and to hell with everything and everyone else. Exhausting.

It’s been less than a week and he’s already fucking everything up.

See what you’ve done America?

From the minimal I understand about politics and trade, it’s not going to go well. I can imagine that this’ll definitely make the costs of a lot of things go up, and with minimum wage still pretty dismal, it’s not looking like an appealing outcome.

Maybe Mazda should talk to FCA again. Didn’t they say they wanted to “outsource” their cars?

Agreed.

I guess I can get myself a boring ass Camry since they’re made here in Kentucky, haha. I’d have to have a V6, though.

But for real. I can totally see Mazda pulling out of the U.S. market eventually. It makes me sad because they make damn good vehicles.

The good thing about this is that all those gremlins in Congress (I’m looking at you, McConnell) are in the spotlight now. If this fucks over, they will likely get their asses fired in 2018.

A place where land is cheap and unemployment is high?

Rural Mississippi? Mazda factory? Hmm...

Mazda is already struggling a bit as it is sadly. Taxes like that and they’ll be pretty much forced out.

Exactly. I don’t see them lasting here more than a few more years at best. I seriously wonder if we should trade ours in while we can.

Rust proofing improved dramtaically within the last few years. I had a 2008 3 that never did rust.

There are likely to be many unintended consequences of Trump’s policies, but try this for irony: Mazda, the maker of one of Jeremy Clarkson’s favorite cars , is likely to suffer in the U.S. over the next few years.

I fail to see the irony here. What does a British man liking the MX-5 have to do with Mazda in the US? This sentence makes no sense.

Their only hope is maybe, just maybe the congressman don’t have their heads quite as far up their you-know-where and laugh that right into the garbage.

Good idea there. They need to do something. I don’t want them to end up leaving like Suzuki. :( Mostly because I own two of their relatively new products.

IMO Mazda has been around since the late 70's and has a fairly well established dealer network and good selling cars like the 3 and cx-5. They are not going anywhere anytime soon. If worse comes to worse, the currently $20,000 msrp will be raised by $2,000 over a couple of years. If they keep making good cars people will buy them. I think the TPP is a recent trade deal so killing it won’t have any effect on the status quo. Imposing a 20% tariff on Mexico imports will make my banana’s costly so I’m not to fond of that idea.

Thankfully the Americans need our water, so probably no tariffs.

I wouldn’t worry too much. I mean there are plenty of Saabs still running around, they’re fine.

Yeah, IIRC they changed their steel supplier in 06. I haven’t seen any real issues with 07+ cars.

Yeah, but they’re a pain in the rear to get parts for or to get serviced. The only people I see or hear of that still own Saabs are dedicated Saab enthusiasts that own older Saabs and work on the cars themselves.

The problem Mazda has is brand recognition. Most people have never heard of them and don’t give them a second thought as they meander down to the Toyota or Honda dealer to get a new RAV-4 or CR-V (or Camry or Accord).

Am I mistaken to not be worried about Mazda resale value in the event that Mazda closes up in the US?

I mean, they make products that people want, so even if the economics change due to tariffs, the existing cars should still be in the same demand, and I don’t imagine them pulling the plug without providing some support for existing owners.

Kinja'd!!! "mazda616" (mazda616)

Their resale is okay considering how much of a relative unknown they are. But that relative unknown-ness would get worse were they to leave the market.
