Sometimes you have to tow a semi.

Kinja'd!!!

The trucker got stuck in soft gravel on an incline, and decided the best way out was the peg the throttle for 10 minutes. Result: tires get buried up to the rim. Took me less than a minute to yank him back down the hill so he could get a better run at it.

ALSO: THESE TRUCKS NEED LOCKING DIFFS! Yes, they can send power to both drive axles, but only one side of the axle will spin at a time.

Well done sir!

Also, I can’t believe most semis have no locking diffs. Yes, most big rigs are on the highway most of the time, but plenty of them need to be able to handle other types of terrain and conditions what with them being work vehicles and all. And when they get stuck, they usually get really stuck.

Yep. I still remember years back when a semi got stuck near the local supermarket (now a Tractor Supply, oddly enough) and my dad pitched in to get him out with a ‘67 Land Rover 109 pickup. My dad was a little careless with wheelspin and snapped a (presumably already fatigued) axle shaft (oops) but he got the guy out and got back to the house with the rear shafts pulled in 4wd.

I’m not even sure any semis have a locking diff option. I’ve yet to see one here in Wisconsin. However, smart driving avoids this situation 99/100.

I was VERY careful to not spin my wheels. I didn’t want to get into the same situation. I put it in 4low and creeped it out of there.

I worked at a truck stop in high school. Truckers would tell me they would get stuck on very little inclines if the conditions were icy. I was surprised when a couples inches of snow on a slippery parking will sideline a 35 ton rig.

Why they don’t have an electronic locker is beyond me.

The incline in our yard is minimal, and it’s gravel. He was just a dumbass.

The old Rovers didn’t have locking diffs and don’t need them for anything sane, but when you’re not doing sane things I have heard of spiders getting toasted in addition to the (more common) axle snap.

the only thing they have is a power splitter (if they have two rear axles) to lock the axles together.

heavy truck tires are meant for one thing and one thing only- load carrying capability. they have stiff, almost un-siped tread which is utterly useless on snow. I had to go pick up a Ram 5500 flatbed (with a few thousand lb. weight on the bed!) and couldn’t get it moving in a snowed-in parking lot.

the force the tires can apply to the road without slipping is simply the normal force (weight on the tire) multiplied by the coefficient of friction between the tire and the road. if the coefficient of friction is really low, all the weight in the world won’t get it to grip.

Round here (UK) the Milk Tankers do. Still need a push/pull sometimes.

No Trucks needed, all you have to do is make friends with the local Audi Quattro Club.

Semi’s or your truck needs a locker? Cause your truck has one and is broke if it is peg legin.

The semi. My truck’s locker works great, and is the reason I bought a GM truck versus a Ford at the time.

It’s surprisingly awesome. Really reduces my use of 4WD.

Right, but not the half ton. I needed a basic work truck that can pull a 7,000lb trailer, so half ton was fine. Even then it cost $29k. Also, Ford had minimal stock on the lots in 2011. Not sure why. I was over there the other week and they probably had 10x the stock as when I was shopping in 2011.
