Update: it seems the tweet is misleading but technically correct. The proposal in Congress is to replace the corporate income tax with a new tax that makes income from exports exempt from taxation. So income from selling Mexican-built cars in the USA is taxed, but income from selling American-built BMW SUVs in Europe is not. However, in the spirit of online journalism, I will leave the original headline and leave this update as hush-hush as possible.
Another Update: turns out the White House is just spit-balling here, gang, don’t take everything we say seriuosly, alright?

Trump of course can’t unilaterally do that. I’m not sure Congress will be receptive. If they do, those cars will have to be made in the US, and while there will be fewer of them, the much bigger issue would be the trade implications, both in terms of Mexico’s retaliation, and the fact that I think we would have to withdraw from NAFTA to impose such a tariff.
