Pretty much my ideal Disco. The price seems right, it has a clean Carfax, under 100k, and the fact that the dealer has 217 photos of it doesn’t hurt either.

I feel like that’s a question that one should never put to a Land Rover.

Whats your tolerance towards unexpected repairs? Not saying its a timebomb, but Its more than likely there will be some hands on time with it...which is sold as a perk by those crazy people called Land Rover enthusiasts.

Okay-ish. With gas mileage like that and my own 70 mile roundtrip commute, I don’t think it would ever be a daily driver.

Why would they take a million photos of a bad car? It must be a good car.

On the plus side it is a Discovery II so that helps, but still it’s a British car that’s old enough to vote.

Then it’s probably a great idea! Financially, it’s a terrible idea. Howeer, if you can walk away from it if when it breaks and you will have fun along the way then it’s probably worth it! People spend a lot more on much more mundane automobiles.

I’m trying to rationalize it that way too. I’m sort of genuinely impressed that they put it up on a lift and photographed the underbody.

Let’s see...17 years old, average American mileage is 15k per year, car has 100k on it. That’s 10 years and 4 months in the shop.

My main worry is that the Carfax shows it at 88313k in 2011 and it has 88366.

I never really trust Carfax, but the possibility that the thing has been “mothballed” is definitely real. I sold a ton of these (lightly used) in the early 2000s, it was generally considered a bad idea. With just 20k on the odometer and 3 years old, they were half of original sticker price. Even if you’re handy, some of the parts still cost a fortune. Our on-site shop guys hated them with a passion. They said it made early 2000s Audi and Jaguar look reliable.

No you should not buy it because I want it.
Also, this guy seems on a mission to sell as many northwestern-y cars as possible to New Jersey.

In all fairness, my early 2000s Jag is kind of reliable.
That’s a good point. I would definitely have to run the idea by my mechanic before thinking seriously about it.

The carfax on this one says it was bought at auction in Illinois, so you’re not far off.

Nope, that’s a D1. Note the door handles and low mounted taillights in comparison to a D2.

Too much money.
Will likely need head gaskets, front cover gasket, water pump, hoses, transfer case reseal, panhard bushings, tie rods/drag link.
They’re actually not too hard to work on, simple to diagnose, and parts can be found for reasonable prices new and used.
It’s a 99 which was a pretty good year. But they’re still asking twice what it’s worth, IMO.

Change to the Disco II was a middle model year change in the US. So DI first have the year and DII the second.

If your not able to do ALL the work in it yourself our you are loaded, I wouldn’t buy one. I have a 2001 DII that I have had for 10 years but I do all the work on it including replacing the head gaskets. It also gets bad mileage, I think I am getting around 14 MPG and it runs premium. It doesn’t get driven daily.
