Dang. I hate news like this. It hits really close to home for me. Our house burned to the ground the weekend after I graduated from high school. We lost a couple of cats and a rabbit. That, and everything else we owned. We were fortunate that nobody was home at the time. I wanted to see my girlfriend after visiting my grandmother, so I drove home while my mom decided to stay the night. When I got home at midnight, the house was ablaze.
The worst part was dealing with the dead pets the next day. I feel for your friends. It’s much easier to bury small animals than large ones.
