How I love the Samba. Too bad it’s a RHD. And an LS although even with 44hp this can be quite fun. More on the Samba tomorrow (French Friday) on Live and let Diecast !

Does RHD really matter on a car that small? Plus stripes, white wheels and rally lights =+20HP. But seriously, that car is a smile generator.

Looking forward to French Friday.

Reading up on that Samba it seems it’s based on the Peugeot 104. Same X engines too, so the quirky ‘suitcase’ engines/transmission combos which share oil and have equal lenght drive shafts. 44 hp certainly will do for a city car, but more is better. My beater ‘86 Peugeot 205 has the same engine (family) but has the XY engine converted to 1 single carb, so I guess about 60 or so hp. That’s fine for what it is.

Yes it does. As I’d have to shift with the left. Totally awkward. As is using the mirrors. If it was a Samba Rallye I could cope with that, not with the base LS ;-)

I did a Samba already a while ago on LaLD. You can check it here if you’re interested. That one has the correct stripes!

One of our dream cars. And it’s beautiful. If I can’t get a 106 Rallye, I just may need one of these. I think you might need this especially since it’s RHD. It’ll help you get over your hatred of shifting with the left hand.

The Samba was cute. There was even a convertible.

Good question. It’d be a perfect companion to the Le Car.

More is (almost) always better. So get a Rallye and take it all the way to that 135hp the Groupe B had! I think the Sambas were even more nimble than your 205, they didn’t even do 750kg!

01/27/2017 at 03:23, STARS: 1

The 106 is way easier to get, remember! Haha, if it was a Rallye I could get over the RHD part, for the 44hp LS... Maybe if it was a bit cheaper.

My beater 205 is 749 kg according to the kentekenbewijs. It was originally a 1.1, the previous owner swapped in the double carbed 1.4 from an early XS, but then transplanted the single carb from the 1.1 onto the 1.4. With 749 kg you can imagine my struggle to be able to pay my ownership taxes. Especially had I opted for the overgangtarief.

As you might know I own three 205s. Besides the gti you’ve seen and the beater base model I just described I also own a cti that’s getting a 2.0 turbo transplant from a Lancia Zeta. More power is a good thing, right?

MORE TORQUE IN THAT CTI WILL TWIST THE ENTIRE BODY! Haha, nice project, can’t wait to see the result. Will you bring that one to Spa?

I don’t think it will be done by then. I’ll take the 406c instead. The guy who’s working on the cti for me (in his spare time) estimated April, early May. He’s got a newborn...
Engine is done, the body is not. Some rust, some paint (engine bay), drive axles, rework transmissions (I’ve got a 1.9 GTi transmission and a 205 turbodiesel transmission; the GTi transmission will get the 5th gear from the diesel), wiring, exhaust (cat), and more.

About the transmission: GTi 1.6 box does 3900 rpm in 5th at 120 kmh, the stock 1.9 3500 rpm and with the diesel conversion about 3050 rpm if I’m not mistaken. Much better for cruising with the lower strung torquey turbo engine and with the first 4 gears the same as the 1.9 GTi it will still be fast.

Torque will go from 132 Nm at 4000 RPM to 235 Nm at 2500 RPM for the CTi. Minor difference, right? It does have the bitchbasket handle older Golf convertibles have as well. I’m confident that alone will be more than enough to counter body twist, although I am contemplating life insurance.

Haha, I remember a trip to Switzerland in a 205 GTI 1.6. That definitely wasn’t a cruiser at high speeds! Sounds like a well thought through project, a convertible is more about torque than hard driving in full attack mode anyway.

I’ve just done an extra post on the Samba today for French Friday btw. Regarding François Delecour’s Monte Carlo car. And if you ever run into a decent Samba in your search for cars keep me posted!

The color and stripes are perfect on this one, though. I could get over it not being a Rallye. I found another car I’m falling in love with:

We must have, yeah. Flip is the perfect name for someone driving a ZS, I think. They are wicked little cars. I’d love to drive one. I also really like the “Peugeot face on a Ford Fiesta” appearance. More expensive than the 106, isn’t it?

He was the first in our family with a mobile phone. While driving that ZS. It was epic. It was a dark grey/greenish color. Another USP/privilege that somehow came along with it was parking it anywhere. Flip didn’t give a shit. It’s more of a classic right now so I can imagine it being higher in value than that 106.

One of those gigantic brick phones? That must have confused people driving that little car. Those phones were expensive. My mom had one that my father got her and she was always like, “it’s such a waste of money. What do I need a cell phone for? Who am I going to call?” It really is a classic. I’ve never heard of one in America. Flip sounds like a real character.

It had the size of a submarine. But it confused many. He often called telephone numbers on trucks if he didn’t like the way they were driving. My sister in law also never wanted a mobile phone. I always mocked her about that. Then she borrowed my C280E and it failed on her. On the highway. Didn’t know what to do. One day later she got one...

That’s hilarious. Over here, some trucks have bumper stickers that say, “Don’t like the way I drive? Call 1-800-EAT-SHIT” I’ve never tried calling the number, though. Mercedes comes through again. That was a pretty good plan.
