Want to know what amazes me in general? That people pushed the limits that hard, even back when there wasn’t nearly as much competition or precedent to do it (which is a major motivator to people’s competitive natures). I mean that for music, athletics, etc. John Bonham, Jim Thorpe, you name it — some people just did things a long time ago that are very rarely repeated. That’s some level of motivation I’ll never personally have, but can aspire to :D

A drummer I used to play with is the biggest Bonzo fan. The volume, the style, the enthusiasm, etc. He was the closest thing to Animal from the Muppets I had ever seen.

This was the only stuff I could find online, and he’s really in the pocket for this album.. But you can hear it.

Cued up a verse/chorus/bridge

I can hear it. Are you part of this?

Christ, I can barely walk and chew gum. I did an Austin Symphony show a few years ago backing up Charlie Daniels. His drummer, and I have no idea of his name, was absolutely remarkable. You cannot possibly overstate the importance of a solid drummer, whether it’s heavy metal, pop or Big Band. The rhythm can make or break a show.

I wish I could play half as good as him.

I’ve been to recitals of world class trumpet players, and then heard my colleagues say, “Well, I guess I should just leave my horn in the case.” I prefer to take the approach that world class players should inspire, not discourage. Sure, I’ll never be as good as Bud Herseth or Phil Smith or Tim Morrison, but I can sure as hell try.

Nah, I was in a very early, much less polished version of that.

Good perspective. We may never be that good, it’s sure as hell fun to try.

People forget he started out in the studio and playing in R&B, jazz and blues bands before he got into Led Zep.

Dennis Chambers, of P-funk, and God knows what else. Check the rhythmic counterpoint. He is literally FUCKING with the rest of the band by plying weird time signatures.

The Rhythm Section is King. No bad is worth a shit without a rock solid section holding the time down. As a bassist I always said, “nobody realizes what I do until I screw up the time.”

In addition to my orchestral work, I often play in brass quintets. Tuba players are notorious for getting slower and slower, but the guy I play with regularly also plays bass in a country band. When we start a piece, by god it never slows down, not a click. I love working with him.

The casual gum chewing really sells it. I love the way he looks at Mike Stern, “You with me man?”

When I’m playing I’m a huffing, puffing, flailing, sweaty mess and I’m half that dude’s size.

Something about large drummers...

The jazz singer Carmen Lundy said it best, “if you have a great bassists, you have a band.”

If the bottom end is tight, EVERYTHING else is so much easier.

Back when I was playing a lot, I found it stressful yet fulfilling. I was/am a huge James Jamerson fan.

There is video of him from a P-funk All Stars gig, 90+min. He never takes a break and never drops the beat. About an hour into the set, his roadie comes out and TOWELS HIM OFF WHILE HE IS DRUMMING. Never wavered. Dude is AMAZING to watch live.

I dug up that live P-funk all stars show. The opening tune is “Funkentelechy/Cosmic Clop” two live classics.
