Your right. Because that tractor is clearly two colors. Allis Chalmers are only one color.

Too many cylinders.

Kinja'd!!!

True story: My first words as a wee one were “Putt putt”, or- the sound a 2 cylinder John Deere makes. My dad farmed with several 2 cylinders, including a wide front 720 like the one above.

Thats still irrelevant. Nickel Back gets more air time on the radio since they are still active. The only people who care for Olivers are people who are past their best before date. They hang on to old beliefs, and refuse to accept anything new... like Led Zepplin fans.

It’s a naturally aspirated diesel, redlining at 2800rpm. It’s not gonna make huge numbers. Keep in mind the torque multiplication you’d get with a 360:1 first gear.

The former hydraulic mechanic in me knows that tractors can only be one color, and that color is only either Komatsu yellow or Hitachi orange. John Deere (whether agricultural or earth moving machines) components were my least favorite to work on.

Their hydraulic cylinders are all assembled with the gland head being retained by an internal snap ring that slots into a groove in the barrel (outside of the pressure area, the o-ring on the head is ahead of the snap ring). To disassemble the cylinder, you have to drive the gland head further into the cylinder (the snap ring compresses and moves forward with it), then attempt to clean out the groove, knock down the lip that has invariably built up along the backside of the groove in the barrel, insert a plastic spacer (that must be dead nuts perfectly sized, which means you make a new one every time), and then pull the entire rod/head/piston assembly out of the barrel. Sometimes enough manual force can remove it, more often the rod assembly has to be chained to a forklift and pulled out that way.

This process will be a god forsaken pain in the ass every single time. This holds true from their biggest cylinder to the smallest. Because the internal snap ring and groove are not sealed from the elements, moisture and dirt will have gotten in there. 50% time the snap ring has corroded to the barrel, and it will be impossible to externally remove every last bit of dirt before driving it in the insert the spacer of removal 100% of the time. This means that the internal sealing surface of the barrel will be damaged 100% of the time, and will require some degree of repair before reassembly (usually welding and polishing the defect on the bore). The reason their cylinders are done this way is because it is a cheap and fast way to assemble them in the factory. Compared to a more common arrangement of the gland head threading into a barrel, the internal snap ring method requires less machining, and the location and depth of the grooves for the internal snap ring on the barrel and gland head only need to be in the ballpark instead of a very tight tolerance machining operation.

Once you get your John Deere apart, the fun continues. The green menace tends to use proprietary (and not particularly high quality) seals and soft parts inside in non-standard sizes. This means the only source for many parts is the John Deere dealer, who bends you over. Their piston designs often use a proprietary, permanent and non-replaceable wear band(s), which means a the customer buys a brand new $150+ dollar entire piston for every rebuild instead of a $5 PTFE piston seal and $10 set of wear bands. Usually the O-ring that seals the outside of the gland head (and sometimes the wiper) are the only standard parts on a John Deere cylinder. The only good news is that once you’ve been bent over by all of this, reassembly is a snap. Slide the piston in the barrel, line up the head, give it a couple of taps and the internal snaps rings pops right into place. This same basic design philosophy and proprietary (and crappy) parts extends to their pumps, motors and valves too.

CAT uses a lot of proprietary seals and soft parts, too, but they are much higher quality/more advanced seal designs and their components are not especially difficult or time consuming to rebuild. The CAT dealer does bend you over, but they at least give you high quality parts.

Case tends to use simple, classic designs and basic, common seals and soft parts. There was nothing real special about Case hydraulics one way or another that I remember.

Komatsu and Hitachi are the only brands of equipment you want to own. Their stuff is beautiful. It is all easily and quickly dissembled, and it is eminently and easily rebuilt. Things tend to be modular and always with external fasteners. The hard parts are beautify machined and usually of very high quality. Most of their cylinder feature chrome lined bores, which is very uncommon (and expensive and very durable). Their soft parts and seals are usually the latest and greatest stuff, in standard sizes and non-proprietary, so you can get parts from Hercules or any other hydraulic supplier of your choice. Komatsu and Hitachi equipment may be expensive up front, but it is the only stuff I would want to own myself.

Where I work everything is JD for one reason and one reason only, the dealership is two miles down the road. The owners would prefer case but getting several million dollars worth of equipment from a dealer over an hour away would be too much hassle I guess.

I worked on a turkey farm that was still using an old Olly. It lasted far longer than many tractors with very little upkeep. Not a massive fan but it wasn’t bad.
