Yup. Definitely a “Why didn’t I think of that?” design.

I may have to look into getting one. Should still work with the poly grommets everyone uses on their VWs to keep the pinch welds from getting buggered too.

The pinch welds on my FR-S are already really screwed up. The cars have very weak ones, which kinda sucks. Oh well. Rusty rockers here I come!

Wow that’s genius! No kidding about the whole ‘why didn’t I think of that’ thing. Would definitely be a nice convenience if one was on the market for a jack.

How many Oppos are lifting more than one corner at a time? Am I in a minority I had no idea about? I guess if you’re lucky, your car could have an accessible jacking point in the front or rear center and get two wheels up at once but is that common? I’ve prolly traveled miles just walking around my car jacking it up, going to get the jack stands, walking around, repeating, then lowering it all down at the end. God forbid I had to max out the jack stands, I’m walking back and forth lifting it and lowering it side-by-side - that’s like a quarter mile in itself!

I’d imagine most are still lifting one at a time. I lift my FR-S from the front crossmember or diff to get two in the air at once. I used to do it one wheel at a time, but my pinch welds have gotten super messed up now.

I am usually lifting more than one corner at a time. My father got a quickjack, it takes longer to set up than using a traditional jack + jack stands, but it’s infinitely easier to lower, and you can move it from the low position to the high position as needed, which makes mounting and unmounting tires much easier(lift to lower setting, remove tires, then lift to high setting to do work, then lower back to lower setting to remount tires). It also picks the car up higher than a jack stand would, and it’s more stable.

I don’t understand why more cars don’t use jack pads like BMW’s have. It makes lifting so much easier. I mean I get pinching pennies and all, but it can’t add more than a dollar or two to the car’s bottom line.

The e36's were even better because you could get an adapter to allow you to lift the car without having to get the jack under it.

I was thinking lately that I could get a steel rectangular beam to go in between frame rails and then slide my jackstands underneath that. I could then do both front wheels at once and I’d get 2 extra inches of life.

They make them for high-lift jacks, so they must exist for floor jacks.

I think he’s saying that there’s no benefit if you lift two wheels at once (from a front or rear jack point), since the jack stand win’t go where the jack goes.

A variation of the Jackpoint stands that use a regular jack to lift, then and you slide in the stand at the same time. But these are only a single height.

right, ok. yeah I rarely ever do it that way. I usually go one corner at a time, and inconveniently have to find two jack point for each corner one for the jack and one for the stand.

I made something similar, except mine is a hockey puck. Cutting the slot with a grinder created a prodigious amount of smoke but the years taken of my life with that are easily worth the security on the jack.

The one benefit of this thing that I could see in your case is that it’d be a lot quicker to get the jack stands underneath, so it wouldn’t be sitting on the jack as long in theory. But I definitely understanding wanting the added insurance of the extra ton rating.

I just looked that up and it seems really neat. The mini auto shop jack essentially? Seems super convenient but how do you set it up? Are they light enough to move from the side of the garage under the car, or do you just keep them in the center of the garage and drive over them like shop jacks?

I know exactly what you’re talking about because I’ve seen it done online for Minis.

Minis (at least mine and the second gen - idk about newer) have plastic jack points at all four corners (see the black nubs sticking out a little in the pic) and somebody did a custom fab of a steel beam with cutouts for these jack points for the same purpose.

I saw it on North American Motoring before but I couldn’t find it in a quick search now.

I love that you posted a Mini as I’ve spent all day thinking about them. I may even go drive a Cooper S this weekend.

Anyways, yeah for a smaller car, I think it seems relatively safe to use a beam for the whole front. If I figure something out I’ll post it on Oppo.

They are light enough to be pushed around easily. My dad keeps them in the middle of the parking spot so they are just under center of the car when he doesn’t need them, then slides them out under the jack points when he does need them.

Well, I just want to drive one.

I like my 944 but I am somewhat tempted by (1) newer cars and (2) quicker cars. A cooper s would be both, and it might actually fit my daughter better but it’s tough to tell(a clubman certainly would). I also think I’d like the size better.

But my attitude towards my 944 is a bit harsh right now because I found an oil leak that’s going to be a bit of a pain to change and it’s dripping on the exhaust, so I’d rather not put it off. I’ll probably fix the gasket and then drive my 944 and be like “oh this car is great”.
