Hi Fellow Opps,
Iv been wanting to get a Manual so i can learn how to drive it and also get a fun car out of it. Long story short I bought myself a 2002 Audi A4 Quattro Manual with 160K miles on it. My goal was to buy it and drive it for 10k miles learn how to drive properly and move on to something better. During the test drive everything was working fine no leaks everything looked good so i bought it for $3500. The guy who had all the paperwork in hand registration pink slip and everything looked legit. paid him cash and signed over the pink slip. went to AAA the next morning to transfer the car and it turns out the registration was not paid for last 3 years and i had to pay for it to register the car for last 3 years and this year (COSTING ME $800). the paperwork he had was all fake/ Including the sticker on the car. At this point the car costed me $4300 already. Was bummed about this already but couldn’t do much as the guy was not answering any calls or anything and we cant find him anymore. I drove the car for a month 1k miles on it learned how to drive the car well and everything is good.
The other day i was driving on the freeway and the car overheated. I pull over and see a water leak so i called a tow truck and have the car towed to my house which was near by. I was hoping for a pipe leak or something minor but couldn’t find a leak in the pipe but saw a lot of liquid coming from around the radiator housing. I was not able to figure out the problem so next morning had the car towed to a shop near by that i trust. The guy basically said the water pump is gone and it might have messed up the engine too and the job will cost $1,000 for the waterpump and timing belt (timing belt is there so its an easy job) but does not guarantee the engine to be working.
Now i’m basically sitting with a big paperweight that i cant drive and has costed me a shit load of money already. I don’t know if the mechanic knows whats going on or what i should do. I’m willing to sell the car as is but i don’t see who will buy it as is. Anyone here any any advise on how to sell this to get most money back or FIX IT without costing me a leg and an arm as i already spent way too much on this car. Its a learning experience but the shitty part is i cant drive my manual and enjoy it.

If you can’t force the seller’s hand, scrap it. It’s just going to cost more. $3500 for a 15 year old Audi is hella-CP anyway. Is this the same one you asked for a VIn check on?

I second this, and this would have been my default action upon realizing something was forged. They should have been able to track down who had previously registered/titled the vehicle.

Tried, filed a case but apparently they guy is no longer in the country so they cant do much about this until he comes back (if he comes back)

Might have messed up the engine? I presume you stopped and called the tow truck as soon as the idiot lights went off and the car said the temp was rising. Our S-Type just blew all it’s coolant out of an intercooler line and it’s perfectly fine after repair and refill.
You have to actually drive a car around a significant distance with no coolant in it to actually overheat and do damage.

Bad water pump and timing belt, possibly seized or scored block, questionable paperwork, and a seller that’s no longer in the country? You could be in for a several thousand dollar repair job. At this point, it seems like your best option is to scrap or part it out.

DMV Cleared it so its not stolen. Transfer went through no problem. Guy fled cops have a report on him but they basically said i’m kind of stuck with it since the guy fled the country.

Not much can be done really given what you’ve said. Either fix it and hope it’s okay, fix it and sell instantly, or part it out/ sell it at a big loss. Unfortunate but it’s hard to think of any other way this could go.

Did not drive it at all. Idiot light came up called the tow truck. Car still had coolent in it while on the tow truck.

Part it out and cut your losses. It’s probably not going to stop being a money pit, so best to get out before you spend even more on it.
If you want another car to learn manual transmission driving on, get a honda or miata or something.

I agree! For all their unreliability reputation, A4s are actually pretty hardy! The transmissions can also take some abuse!

$3,500 for a near-mint condition, one-owner A4 with full records wouldn’t be unreasonable. Doesn’t sound like the case here.

Well, if you are handy with basic tools and have a space to store a half taken apart car, start removing stuff(lots of YT videos and Forum DIY’s on how to remove specific parts). Get an ebay account. Take off the parts that are worth decent amount (i.e. worth your time to ship), like the airbags, seats(if they are in decent condition), headlights and taillights, doors, trunklid etc. Research what the parts are worth an sell them around that price.
Or you could just sell it as a parts car on CL, but you wont get much.

Are you at all handy with a wrench? Have something else to drive for a while?
My vote is to get the exact issue figured out, buy the parts, spend some time on the forums reading DIY guides (there are tons for everything you would ever need to do), and go get your hands dirty.
I just finished doing an engine swap and timing belt job on what is known as a complete nightmare of an engine (2.7 bi-turbo), and it really didn’t cost me all that much to do.

That comes with everything you need. Belts, gaskets, water pump, pulleys, thermostat + housing, etc. You should have that done in a weekend with taking your time, and you’ve got yourself a running Audi. After that, you can sell it and recoup wayyy more money than if you parted it out now.
Don’t get too down on the situation until you know what you’re dealing with!

This is something i am looking into doing but dnt have the confidence in doing so until this post.
i haven’t found a good guide for a 3.0 V6. You think its much different?
I have worked on other cars in the past but nothing like this audi. Ya i have another car so this would be a good project. lets see if i can find some guides and parts for it.

And bam! You’re good to go! After that you can drive it around for a while knowing you just took care of some of the biggest problem areas of these cars (besides coil packs, but those are easy to change), or you can just go and sell it and not loose a shitload of money like you would if you sold it now.
I spent about $2500 total on my Allroad to get it up and running. That is including the car, a replacement 2.7 from an S4, and all the parts and fluids needed to get it working and nice. Even with an Audi, the cost is not bad when you do everything yourself!
