Kinja'd!!!

There’s not a whole lot of support for the Mazda 323 GTX here in the States. Which is why I ordered a ramhorn turbo manifold from a guy in Malaysia who makes them.

Kinja'd!!!

Ever since the 2.5" turbo-back exhaust was installed, the car has been overboosting in cold weather. An external wastegate should fix that problem, and the stock turbo manifold is notorious for developing a crack where the O2 sensor is. Two birds with one stone.

That’s awesome. I love that people are still making custom upgrade parts for obscure cars. Now to find a supercharger for my ‘87 CRX...

A supercharged CRX sounds like it would be a whole heap of fun.

is there a performance reason it’s shaped like that, or is it more a packaging/fit thing?

the world needs moar interesting manifolds:

Apparently it was a big deal back in the day, and you can still find kits for 2nd gen (d16) CRXs, but not 1st gens with the d15, like mine.

I appreciate this. I also learned the 323 in non-US markets could have the KL** series v6. Imagine that, boosted, in your GTX......

Sounds like it’s time to swap motors.

External wastegates are bonkers. My friend’s turbo Miata spits flames out of a hole in the hood when you hit 20psi :D

I’m no engineer, but as I understand it, the ramhorn design features a more efficient collector which translates to more power in some applications. I’m not really expecting a power gain with the GTX, but it’d be nice!

323GTX is a turbo BP right?

Good luck finding an AWD transmission that would work with the V6!

Yeah, maybe. I just like the D15. It’s plucky and unique. Plus, it’s original to the car. Still, it’s at 192k. When I finally have space to restore the old rust nugget, I’ll probably upgrade to a D16, or even a B-series.

My GTX, a BF chassis, has a turbo B6 (B6T). The BG chassis GTX used a BPT, but those didn’t come to the US.

That’s right. That’s why my 1.6 liter NA Miata had all these nice oil fittings for turbo stuffage. Where does the oil drain to on a GTX? Is there a bung formed into the oil pan?

I’d go balls out and stuff an H22 in it.

Or a turbo VTEC B16/18, I guess.

I believe the goal is to have equal length tubing to ensure balanced flow to/from each cylinder.

Nah. Gotta keep it small and light. The H22 is too big and not known for reliability.

Assuming the application can afford the space, the shape of that could be improved by having the exhaust after the collector split more equally between the turbine inlet and the external wastegate.

This one isn’t anywhere as bad as some I’ve seen, but in many cases the wastegate pipe is tacked on like some sort of afterthought. Once the turbo spools to target boost and the wastegate opens, there is significant exhaust flow through the wastegate. Optimizing the path through that can be important for performance in the high rpm band.
