Kinja'd!!!

It’s time to buy some bigger/different autocross wheels for the FR-Slow, and against my better judgement I’ve decided to take Oppo’s opinions into consideration.

Here are the contenders:

17x9 +40 949Racing 6UL (tungsten)

Kinja'd!!!

17x9 +40 949Racing 6UL (bronze)

Kinja'd!!!

17x9 +35 Enkei RPF1 (matte bronze)

Kinja'd!!!

17x9 +35 Enkei RPF1 (white)

Kinja'd!!!

Benefits of the 6ULs: cheaper, less common, and better brake clearance if I ever decide to go with a BBK

Benefits of the RPF1: lighter, better offset (ignoring slightly less clearance with BBKs), and I think the colors look better.

So what say you, Oppo?

RPF1s, no question.

The 6UL’s are weird looking and your car won’t ever need a BBK. They’re less common for a reason - because the RPF1s are better.

RPF1 In bronze.

I wouldn’t necessarily say that’s why they’re less common. Production and distribution capabilities and release date (just came out for Toyobarus awhile ago) probably play a bigger role there.

As for better, that’s pretty debatable. RPF1s are lighter, but 6ULs are stronger because they’re flow formed instead of low pressure cast (which is how the RPF1s are made). Although since I’m not going to be ripping around tracks on R-comps that 2nd point is kinda moot.

It’s really a toss up for me on all of these. Although I think either RPF1 would probably look better. That matte bronze is an awesome colors, and so is white but hard to clean.

What’s the weight difference?

If it’s negligible, I vote Tungsten 6ULs.

Ultraleggeras aren’t available in the right size (17x9), and are also heavier than I’d like for autocross.

I could daily drive on a wheel like those, but would prefer to get the Gram Lights 57xtreme for a wheel of that style.

~1-1.5lbs/wheel

The 6ULs are 16.9lbs, and the RPF1s seem to range between 15.4lbs and 15.9lbs depending on the color and who is supplying the data.

I like my 15x8 bronze 6ULs quite a bit.

They do tend to look great on Miatas. I wish there were more pictures of them on Toyobarus, but since they only came out last year and aren’t as well known as other manufacturers in the FR-S/BRZ scene not a lot of people have them yet.

If I was rallying, totally. For autox, not so much. haha Not the right size, price or weight. ;)

So 4-6 lbs total? I think I’d definitely go with the 6ULs then.

Two very good choices. I have RPF1s sitting in my basement waiting to be mounted onto my NA. Mine are 15" and above that diameter I think the 6UL wheels would look better. I think you just need to choose between form or function and just go with that. Since this is for AutoX that decision may be easy.

I’d say each option checks both the form and function boxes, but if the metric we’re measuring off of is solely weight then obviously RPF1s win.

Yeah the only wheel on the market lighter than my stock 10.5lb NA wheels are RPF1s.

How about the Enkei Raijins though?

Edit: Nevermind I realised that is a pic of your car at the top. So your in stx. In that case the 949 racing wheels in tungsten. Rpf1's are nice quality wheels and light, but dont look anywhere near as cool as the 6ul’s IMO, and are not as popular as the rpf1's(which means you can tell what stx frs is yours in a sea of them at the auto-x!).

I do like those, but they’re also about 2lbs heavier than RPF-Juans.

I wouldn’t know, haven’t seen them on my car yet and don’t plan to. haha

I’m leaning toward the matte bronze Juans

I vote for RPF1s, but I’m really not a fan of the color options on a red car. I’ve been pretty happy with that wheel on cars in the past.

01/25/2017 at 15:23, STARS: 0

I like both, but matte bronze would be easier to maintain. Keeping white wheels clean sucks.

Gold is an option too, but I feel like it’s just too common. I’d prefer the matte bronze if I’m going for that sort of color.

01/25/2017 at 16:13, STARS: 0

Yeah I had the matte bronze and it wasn’t hard to keep clean at all. Of course that depends on the pad compound, but it will definitely be easier than white.

01/25/2017 at 16:38, STARS: 0

Since my pads will be daily and autox, they shouldn’t dust too badly. I honestly don’t think the white would be too bad, as long as I stopped by a power wash after every event.
