A Man Called Ove
is about the misadventures of a local grumpy old man (and Saab superfan) as he attempts to take his own life after being widowed and forced into retirement. In true Scandinavian fashion, it’s a comedy. It gets a bit sappy at points, and there’s the usual Nordic film subplots, but there’s lots of good car jokes and plenty of vintage Saabs and Volvos. Well worth throwing on your Netflix queue.

It’s a new release here, so it’s likely to pop up somewhere in a few months. You can rent it through Youtube as well in the US, not sure if that’s an option in the Netherlands.

Read the book recently. Can actually be quirky funny or really painful on film. Curious to see how much of the Saab fandom and Volvo, BMW, Audi hate makes it to the movie.

The guy that plays Ove does a really good job of it, but yeah, the material could have been quite painful if it wasn’t done well. I would say that a lot of the Saab fandom is there, and there’s a particularly good scene where his hatred of Volvos and BMWs is on full display.
