I really want break this down. The have 106 miles to Chicago with a full tank of gas. The fuel tank in a 1974 Dodge Monaco 440 held 25.1 gallons (US Gallon). It’s EPA avg fuel economy (as per 1974) is 11.5mpg, but they are driving with heavy foot so I’ll give them an optimist 7mpg. That leaves them with 175.70 miles to empty.

They burned 60% of fuel in the total 106 miles traveled. I was bored.

Yeah, but they also “threw a rod”, so how much oil does the Dodge have, how long can it keep running with said rod being thrown, and when would it run out of oil? Now do that math, mister smarty pants!

Did you factor in the cop motor, cop tires, cop shocks, cop suspension, and the fact that it was a model made before catalytic converters so it runs good on regular gas?

I can think of 4 factors. Size of the hole the rod made, viscosity of oil, engine RPM, & the amount of oil in the engine. It could have burnt some oil, so it could be less the manufacture recommended amount. All of those should = the miles traveled.

7 mpg is high. My Ranger gets about 5-6 mpg under race conditions with a modern 4.0 V6 plant.

You are missing the cop tires, they are good for 2-3 mpg in that car!

To put this on perspective, my ‘74 corvette gets 7-10 miles per gallon, so this is plausible

It is arguably the best line* in one of the greatest films of all time:  The Blues Brothers!
