That article features some alternative facts. 917s first raced in 1969, and were not very successful due to incredible instability, because Ferdinand Piech was obsessed with selling VW TDIs low drag at all costs. One killed John Woolfe on the first lap of Le Mans 1969, after several top drivers had called it dangerous. It first won Le Mans in 1970, not 1971. The engine was not “two 911 engines joined at the crank” in any sense other than displacement and basic layout, they are significantly different to any 911 engine, with 4 cams, gear drive (including to the output), and a flat fan.
But yeah, pedantry aside, I want it. I’m just going to go find a cash machine...
