I’ll be heading to Hawaii for a week on the big island on Friday. I spent a week in Kauai a couple of years ago, so we’re doing a different island this time. We’ll be staying on the dry side of the island north of Kona. Current plans call for plenty of time on the beach and snorkeling, going up the mountain, checking out volcanoes, hitting up a couple of museums and seeing what Kona and Hilo have to offer. I’m sure we’ll drive around the entire island at least once.

I’d like to play a round or two of golf, but the prices at most courses for a round and club rental tended to leave me wondering if they also come with a blow job for that much money, so golfing may not happen. Also, many courses, especially sea-side courses, look like they may be a bit beyond my skill level. I keep looking at pictures and thinking that I could lose many golf balls on that course, but I suppose they would be an especially scenic place to lose golf balls.

Any oppo recommendations or local spots to hit on the big island? I’m all for interest stuff to see/do and hole-in-the-wall type places with good food and drink.

Car picture from Kauai for your time: Slightly pictured was the 2014 Malibu rental car. While not at all interesting or special, I do remember being pleasantly surprised that is was a perfectly descent car that wasn’t unpleasant to drive that GM sold for a reasonable price. (I wouldn’t buy one, but it was a good demonstration of how good even mediocre cars have become today) This picture represents just about as far West as one can drive on a public road in the United States. This is at Barking Sands beach out past the Pacific Missile Range Facility.

Interested to see what people say. My girlfriend and I are headed to Oahu in March and might try to hop to the big island for the day. So any Oahu recommendations would be welcome. Sorry to hijack

Kona Brewing Company! Try all their wares, and send me some of the ones that don’t make it to the mainland. Love me some Longboard, which I discovered with my wife on our Kaua’i honeymoon.

My wife and I are heading to Maui at the end of February for 10 glorious days. We’ve been a few times before and we keep meaning to visit other islands but we love Maui so much it’s hard not to keep going there.

Let’s see... where to begin:

Hilo:

Ken’s House of Pancakes - The Rock’s photo is all over the place in there (it’s supposed to be owned by some part of his family) try order the Sumo (for your table, not just you)

In Kona it depends on what has been built up or gone out of business:

Kona Brewery (of course as someone else mentioned)

Scandinavian Shave Ice (everywhere else in the islands they call it Kona Shave Ice)

Hayashi’s YouMakeTheRoll - it’s a little shop in the corner of of a crappy market near Uncle Billie’s; Try the Ninja Star, and anything else you want from the list or make something up (expect to wait half an hour for your order)

Kona Inn for the Mud Pie maybe (Huggo’s on the Rock has it as well if I remember properly)

Stop in to buy some Donkey Balls (can’t remember the name of the place KickAss coffee maybe)

Grab some coffee and breakfast (or dinner) at Huggo’s on the Rocks.

L&L’s of course (or any of the other Mix Plate places.

I know there are some new breweries open on the Island - one is up in Waimea from what my friends tell me.

Make the hike out to Green Sands near South Point; consider jumping in the Blow hole at South Point, then actually jump off South Point, but remember to enter cleanly, then swim into the Blow hole, time the crest with the swell and climb up the rocks inside to get back to the top.

Drink the wine at Volcano Winery (just to say you tried it; I think it tastes like liquid shit)

Hike back to any of the beaches of Kona Coast State Park that are Northish of the main beach (can’t remember the name of them right now for some reason).

Looking forward to the replies here and a post trip followup as I will be heading to the Big Island for the first time at the end of February and am curious about some of the lesser known attractions. Good luck!

Oh, depending on where you are staying, do take Mamalahoa Hwy instead of Queen K if there is traffic and you are headed out of Kona toward the resorts/Waimea. Especially Old Mamalahoa Hwy (take this any chance you get if you like twisty roads) there are some sections of it that take you quite a bit longer to get someplace, but the view of the forests/coffee plantations is great. Of course you need to check out the valleys on the north end.
If you can find it there is a 4 wheel drive dirt road/path that is a couple valleys past Hawi that leads sort of towards a lighthouse, but you stay right and it goes to these cliffs with a rope down to some tide pools. It’s really locals only as far as I know - like Makalawena (the set of beaches I mentioned in Kona Coast State park) used to be.

If you like Western History/Christianity stop into the church in Kailua-Kona that is across from the Palace/Museum - it’s the first church in Hawaii and it has a model of the ship the Bible came on as well as some interesting stuff regarding how Polynesians navigated (or it did anyway, it’s been 5 years since I lived there.)
