Kinja'd!!!

You may have noticed if you attend a large or private university that there is a correlation between cars that are unusually high-end or flashy for a college campus and Chinese foreign exchange students. It may be a stereotype, but it’s a relatively harmless one and one that certainly seems to have a basis in fact, or at least anecdotes. I was interested to find out more about this because it’s not as though Chinese-native foreign exchange students are inherently wealthier than any other foreign exchange students, or that China has a particular culture of extravagant spending. You can read the articles for yourself, but apparently part of it has to do with how much cheaper these cars are here than in China; the students justify the purchase at such a young age by the fact that, even with their families’ wealth, this may be their only chance to own such a car.

On my campus, it is middle eastern students. Why would you fly half way around the world to attend a middle of the road, state university?

I go to a community college, and I’m constantly seeing BMW M cars, GTRs, AMGs, and a lot of other exotic sports cars.

This is actually a great point. I had a Singaporean ex whose father bought a new 5 Series every four years, and it was something like $130,000 with all of the associated fees included. He would freak out every time I told him what cars cost here and remark to his very disinterested wife “Wah, $400,000 for a Rolls Royce? If we move here, I could have a Rolls Royce.”

Although, conversely, I went to a fancy university with a huge amount of Chinese nationals, and really flashy cars just weren’t a thing, because having a car wasn’t really a thing. And it wasn’t for a lack of money. One of my friend’s graduation gift was a Murcielago, and that was after he went back to Singapore.

It’s also easier to donate your way into an American private university than an elite Chinese university*

*does not apply to vast majority of Chinese students in US universities.

Interesting that the last article you posted in from U of Oregon. That’s where I live, and yes, in the last 6ish years there has been a spike in newish high end luxury and sports cars. Theres a whole dealership in our town that seems geared towards international students, and my wife told me they have an I8 on their lot.

But yes, the common theme from various news reports in town is that the super wealthy are the minority and that it’s as much about the opportunity to own the car at what’s considered a much more affordable price than what’s available in China. There was an article in one of our news outlets where a girl explained that her dad bought her a Jaguar because it cost the same as what some other car (can’t remember exactly) that he was going to buy her in China if she stayed for school.

Also consider the idea that in Chinese culture is to push your children to achieve and many of the international students come from well to do families. We have a number of international students in my classes in a private school, I don’t even blink when I see luxury marques anymore. But we don’t have anything really exotic on campus, but our school is in the “country” so a SUV makes more sense to them.

I don’t know if the bros in daddy-purchased cars should be countyed as “exchange” unless it is an exchange of money for residency. Around here many parents also buy real estate to make it easier/faster, as if you “invest” a certain amount, it works better. No vetting of the money, which would probably get you arrested had you made it the same way here, at least before the wondrous new regime. It’s hilariously bad in Vancouver, too, which became a sketchy money escape pod some time ago.

These are effectively the same people the French dealt with in 1789.

Way back around Y2K when I was a student, I knew a Taiwanese student who had a blank check (within reason) t0 buy a car. When he finally got his license (fun story), he picked an everyday Honda Accord, a dark green sedan no less. It apparently cost much more at home, and he was thrilled with it. Not flashy or dbaggy unlike today, as the CCP officials have no doubt accumulated more gold in the meantime. Sad how it typecasts the non-showboats.

The M3... Great car. Not cheap but not incredibly expensive either. 60k$ in the US. 160k$ in China. Easy to see why when they come to North America they crave on high end sports cars... Sell your Prius, get a 911 with the money!

Because America has a really, really good university system.

Basically, the middle of the road state school is probably better than most universities back home except theit equivalent of Harvard, and significantly easier to get into.

Can concur. I did research on Chinese higher education last year, and found that it’s not only very expensive, but very competitive. So much that applicants sometimes cheat on their admission exams. The US has it really, really good.
