What cars really have a manual mode? I.e. Let me just bounce off this rev limiter for a while if you don't mind.

Kinja'd!!!

Anyone know what cars with manual mode automatic transmissions don’t intervene at redline and let you just bounce on the limiter(not that you necessarily should)? What about ones that don’t let you lug the engine?

I was driving an auto with a manual mode option once and when it cut in at what it thought was redline but I definitely did not and I thought to myself, “well this is hardly manual mode at all.” I guess a car like that still allows you to downshift but one of the fun things about a manual is trying to squeeze every last rpm out sometimes.

So, engine health be damned, what manual mode automatics have the least amount of intervention?

The DSG in my Audi will not shift for you in full “manual”mode except when coming to a stop, If you’re in 3rd-6th the car will shift you into first as you stop.

Both the GT-R and the CLS63 let me smack the limiter for an hour in any gear, if I wanted. I could lug either as well.

I remember hitting the redline on accident in the C7 Vette, so add that to the list!

Mine. My FTO will go the limiter (8200 rpm) and won’t change down until you stop.

C Class Mercedes will let you redline all day. Actually any Merc I’ve driven I’ve been able to keep it at redline.

Probably cars that have a genuine Automated manual. Never encountered an Automatic that gives you a manual mode that allowed true manual mode. (not saying it might not exist, just I’ve never encountered it) Also most of them are so slow it’s annoying and worthless, just a cheap gimmick.

all of them will down shift for you if coming to a stop. lexus will let you bounce it off the limiter, but no let you lug it (IE, cruiser in 6th and stomping on it, it will down shift)

our audi on the other hand, will lugg it all day and night. but auto shifts at the limiter

I’m almost positive that the NC Miata’s automatic will let you bounce off of the rev limiter. Paradoxically—and irritatingly—it downshifts on its on if the peddle is pressed too far or the car starts slowing down.

Not that anything the automatic does matters when it’s a Miata, obviously.

I’m almost completely certain that my XJ8 will bounce off of the limiter when you leave it in a lower gear, but I don’t hate my transmission and my bank account enough to actually test that.

Anything with a full manual mode valve body, though that’s just a handful of things ever outside of specialty hot rods and drag cars.

Do any cars with flappy paddles have a neutral gear if I hold both paddles down? I want a coasting gear I can control like my current manual.

I think you mis-understood. There are 2 ways car manufactures do this. One is to install the same old Automatic transmission that has been around for many decades and allow you to suggest the shift point. The other is to install a manual transmission, like found in many higher end cars, like Audi as was mentioned, and Ferrari, and all race cars. they have clutches just like a manual transmission, no Torque converters. And they operate the clutch and shift the gears when you actuate the paddle. but you have no shift lever, just the paddles.

Definitely most dual clutches will. I assume even then there is a damage protection feature at some point (which is why all will downshift before the equivalent of a stall/hurt the transmission my guess would be).

I know what an automated manual is, and most importantly a DCT (most common type to have paddles) is actually doing something more than just “operating the clutch” because it has two clutches and always has one or the other in. MY POINT was that there is another option beyond that or just an auto with electronically selected/suggested shifting, and that is an older style auto with full manual control of the valve body - the part that actually controls shifting.

In a very few cases, a manufacturer has offered (like above) an option in that way for full manual control of shift points on an auto transmission. None do that currently that I’m aware of, not in that way.

2014 Camaro RS I drove as a rental had really good paddle shifters. It held the gear to redline and even let me bounce off it. I didnt really test it out to see how long I could redline it but it definitely did not get in my way during spirited driving. It did however like to downshift as it pleased. But this was only an issue when I would manually downshift it while braking. Then when I got on the throttle out of a turn, I’d find it just banging off the redline because the car also downshifted on its own, leading to 2 downshifts. That car made me believe that automatics with proper paddle shifters can actually be fun.

Oddly enough in manual mode on my automatic V6 accord, you can’t rev past like 3500 in first gear. Every other gear you can get up to like 6k though.

I’ve found that second gen smarts don’t care too much. You can lug the engine and you can drive at redline all day erry day.

It does have some safeguards though, like if speed drops below 27mph in 5th gear it’ll downshift, and if you bounce off the rev limiter 3 times at once it’ll upshift.

It actually came up in the comments on the FP that there are apparently quite a few automatics with a manual mode that is pretty non-invasive. And apparently with the newer autos like the ZF 8 speed that is in FCA products and BMW, the manual mode is supposed to be prett entertaining.

Oddly enough the 2nd gen Saturn Vue will let you bounce off the limiter all day long in manual mode until you shift it. It will however downshift if it knows accelerating in the current gear would cause lugging.

A 2004 Mazda 3s will let you hit at least 7k (redline at 6.5k on the 2.3 engine) and I’m not sure there is a limiter. You can lug it off the line too if you want but it will downshift for you when coming to a stop, usually down to 3rd and then 1st.

I wasn’t paying attention powering out of some curvy roads and found I was over 7k in second.

The current Mazda 6, while it will downshift if you let the revs fall enough, will also let you go up to redline up to a point in manual mode. Probably for self-preservation against idiots.

The 2010-2012 Fusion Sport with the 3.5L and the SelectShift 6spd auto will hold the gear and let you bounce off the rev-limiter as long as you want.

Also as another plus, its manual mode is the CORRECT layout: push forward to downshift and pull back to upshift. I was pleasantly surprised to learn both of these facts in the ‘12 Sport I recently picked up.

Years ago when my wife had a 2008 G6 GXP sedan, the manual mode was all sorts of wrong. It was the wrong layout (push to upshift, pull to downshift), the response from your input was way too slow, and while the redline on the gauge was at 7k RPM, the rev-limiter was at 6500. Dumb. The whole manual mode on that car was poorly executed and downright pointless, so after trying it out a couple times when she first got it, it was never used again and forgotten about. That car was surprisingly quick though for what it was. Would probably give my Sport a run for its money.

I think what you’re talking about with the G6 is what a lot of people associate with manual modes and it doesn’t add much to the driving experience. I know manual mode auto is not a replacement for a manual but when it’s done well, it does add something,

Kinja'd!!! "QCGoose" (chrismcfate)

I agree. When done right, they can be a nice “consolation” for being stuck with an automatic, but the manual mode in the GXP did the driver no favors and added nothing worthwhile to the driving experience; you were better off forgetting about it and leaving it in auto.

Though, as much better the Fusion Sport’s manual mode is over the GXP’s, it’s still something I’ll rarely ever use past the couple times on the first day I brought it home, just to see how it behaved. Input is still too delayed to pass as “acceptable” for enthusiastic driving, and for the type of car it is anyway, it’s best to just leave in auto.

For sportscars and exotics with quick DCTs and even quick-responding torque-converter autos (Corvette, F-Type, etc.), I can absolutely see the appeal and honestly do enjoy using them. But in everything else, manual mode is basically just a gimmick IMO.
