The F-150's rear sliding window porthole. That sliding window that is useful only for grabbing a beer on the move from the guys riding in the back accommodating long items that would otherwise be hanging way over the tailgate.

Kinja'd!!!

So what exactly were they thinking here? Sure it looks neater, but the window is now not only ridiculously small, but now instead of your load resting on the metal track it’s resting on... glass. Specifically, an expensive-looking one-piece construction that is the rest of the rear window. And probably tempered (iirc all windows but the windshield are usually tempered, no?) glass at that, which could mean bad times if your load chipped the edge...

In fairness, I’m sure Ford didn’t neglect the shattering issue, but that opening is still stupidly small and I don’t like the idea of my load surface being glass.

Yeah having a window there works but this new design seems goofy.

I’ve never had a long load protrude into the cab through the sliding back glass, hang it off the tailgate and tie a red flag.

They’re great for opening with door windows down to allow air to pass through on a hot summer afternoon, though.

I mean, a feature of having that rear window power operated means it gets smaller, no matter who makes it... but this is just too damn small.

It is ridiculously small. Ford seems to be the worst offender though. The Titan isn’t that bad.

Still don’t see why we can’t just roll the whole thing down though.

I’ve been wondering why barely any trucks have a rear sliding window anymore. This doesn’t satisfy me.

Does Toyota have a patent on power retractable rear windows or something? The Tundra/Sequoia/4Runner all have it and it seems like the obvious, and likely less expensive, solution here.

IIRC, this is a thing on most Tundra’s. I don’t drive a truck, but this would be a huge plus in my opinion.

Hmm not sure how that one actually works, but all the rear sliding windows I have seen you did not have glass below it. I love them, but then, I loved them because when we would go camping our dog would ride in the bed, we had a grommet like thing that connected the cab window opening to the topper window. Our dog would stick her head through the opening and rest it on my shoulder so I could pet her. Always wanted a sliding window in every truck I’ve owned, but the availability was always limited, and never with other options I really needed.

I think they mostly are there to allow venting, which is probably why they are so much less common. Although most are used as an easy way to through your empties into the bed.

You, then, are who this current one is designed for.

Try accomodating 16' lengths of “insert material here”. Pickups are great for many things, which is why they took off in the first place. Long loads aren’t their forte. Even with the longest possible combination currently offered, you will still have it hanging over the tailgate. With the Crew/short configuration being most common, that leaves a good 5' over the tailgate. There’s nowhere to go but through the window. Unless you have a backrack, which surprisingly most contractors here don’t.

This man speaks the truth. I traded in my 07 F250 for a ‘13 and lost the power sliding rear window; its best use was to open the sunroof and the rear slider and you could get great air flow through the cab.

True, but they have missed the more practical use of that window, like I said. I’ve seen that window used more as a bed extender than anything else.

If I was hauling 16' loads with regularity, I’d be throwing a pipe/ladder rack on as soon as I left the dealership.

You’re 100% correct about shortbed crew cabs, though. Had this come into the shop (not a full sized truck, but still...) a couple weeks ago, and about died laughing:

You’d think so, wouldn’t you. It only makes sense. But no. So the window gets used, and should be taken into account as such when it is designed.

I think the rental Ram 1500 I drove had a power sliding rear window which I thought was weird.

I found this patent, but it doesn’t mention toyota owning it.

My dad was always a has to have a sliding rear window kind of guy, and kind of instilled that in me as well. Those were the days of regular cab or short extended cab trucks though. I remember climbing most of the way out of the truck a time or two as a kid to grab something out of a cooler, but I can’t remember the last time I’ve actually used my rear window for anything useful in my own truck. The one use it really comes in handy for is backing the boat down the ramp. Having the window open makes it much easier to hear the guy in the boat.

Most of that glass is decorative, from the inside the rear window is only as tall as the slider portion and there is a regular frame like any other rear slider. There’s still a headrest in the way, but the window is normal, it just looks fancy from the outside.

First thing, they aren’t for cargo. Secondly, if you have ever been in a truck with the windows down and the rear glass open, you’d understand. It allows for so much air flow through the cabin with a significant drop in turbulence. Sliding/opening rear glass is a very nice option.

01/24/2017 at 16:22, STARS: 0

First thing, they are USED for cargo. They are a very handy feature and I’d think the manufacturers would know by now. Second, this could also be aided by the bigger windows you used to get, no? And lastly, I’m not arguing against that. I’ve considered swapping my fixed glass window for the sliding glass quite a few times.

Kinja'd!!! "Censored" (chrisbrown2992)
01/24/2017 at 16:36, STARS: 0

I’ve never seen one used for cargo. Seems like a high probability of shattered glass. Do they advertise sliding glass as extended cargo and I missed it? I know that the avalanche had the removable rear glass and lower panel to create an 8' box inside the truck, but that is a far cry from a sliding glass. I’m genuinely curious what you would put through the cab of a truck and into the bed as cargo? I don’t like having excess cargo in the cab of the truck for the very small chance that you’d be involved in an accident.

Also, I agree that the whole glass sliding like the toyotas would be awesome and have wondered why manufactures don’t offer this on all trucks. It would be literally the easiest power window ever, the glass is flat and mounted to a flat wall.

Kinja'd!!! "Pickup_man" (zekeh)
01/24/2017 at 17:15, STARS: 1

The window itself? No, the outer probably 3-4 inches of the rear window are purely decorative. From the inside it looks like a regular old slider, and isn’t as small as it seems actually.

Not advertised as such, but where I work (interior trim company) that’s what it gets used for. Long (16') material gets put in through the cab by a large number of our customers who even though they use their trucks for work prefer to have the crew/short style. This wasn’t an issue afaict in older designs, the loads were never resting on the glass. This looks like an invitation to disaster just on that point, never mind the size being annoying.
