I’ve come to the conclusion that I can’t presume the 2005 Focus will keep running forever, and I also tend to research for an extremely long time before buying.

Some sort of truck is on the list, it would be nice to stop towing our popup with the Sienna. It will pull it, but I’m maxing the towing capacity. As well, Mrs. Comes Over would rather I not do stuff like haul plywood or lumber in it.

Just on “something like that’d be nice”, I looked at Colorado/Canyon (new version). However, just in searching autotrader, there’s not much out there in 4WD for less than 30K, even used. However, it’s not hard to find a couple year old F-150 for less than $30 with not oo many miles on them, even. Not sure I want a full size, it’ll be a big change in garage space from a Focus to a F-150, but I’m also not sure I want to pay a premium for a Colorado/Canyon.

Anything I should know about late model F-150's? I think some of the ones I was seeing are the V-6 Ecoboost, which I’d probably be fine with.

Have you ever thought about a used 2006-2014 Honda Ridgeline? They don’t have the best fuel economy, but neither do the other trucks you considered. They don’t have the best towing capacity either, but it has “a total payload capacity ranging from 1,475 lb (669 kg) to 1,559 lb (707 kg), depending on trim level.” - Wikipedia. You can find them for much cheaper than $30K nowadays. They are also very versatile with AWD only, on all late models (non-2017).

As far as F150 pricing goes, MSRP on brand new ones ranges from about $30k to $70k. Due to this, used prices will vary greatly depending on trim level.

As far as driving goes, make sure you get one with a backup camera, and get used to backing into spots. Not sure when they started putting in front parking sensors as well, but those will help make it easier to know when you’re about to hit something.

Don’t forget to check the axle ratio - Most recent F150s will have 3.31 / 3.55 / 3.73 options if I remember correctly. Obviously higher # is better for power but worse for fuel economy.

If you’re will to wait a while (2 years?) Ford announced Ranger. MY19, so ready next year.

Valid point...will certainly consider, but in the midwest, I’ll have a lot more used to pick from if it’s got a bowtie or blue oval on the front of it. I’ll have to keep an eye out for Tacos.

Yeah, I wish it was here now...it might be that long, but I wonder if it’ll be the same thing with the Colorado/Canyon...they’re so popular the first few years that there seems to be a little ‘premium’ on their values.

I just can’t get past the looks...that and the Avalanche, and sorry Opposaurus, the Explorer Sport Trac...I’m sure they’re good options, and maybe I’m missing a value, but I just don’t like the looks.

Understandable. Many people don’t like the looks. 2017 Ridgeline?

Would need to be a full cab, I sat in those ranger jump seats when I was a kid, would not subject my kiddos to that. ;-)

It’s like they fixed the bed area, but then made the front worse...”hey, what’s our best selling car...the accord? Make it look like the Accord!”

I’m sorry, I hate to sound like the guy who asks for advice, then poo-poos all of it. If the new one had the front end of the old one, I’d probably consider it.

As a Taco owner, I’ll second Peter Black’s suggestion. Perhaps 2wd will help you save some cash? Mine is a 2005 5-spd 2WD 2.7L, and I love it. It’s hauled bricks, soil, sand, gravel and mulch and averaged 24MPG since I’ve had it.
