Went to take the Sentra off of my car insurance. It was adding $40 a month to my payment. Well, as it happens my rates went up this month by $35 a month so I save a grand total of one Wendy’s 4 for $4 per month. Stellar. Thanks assholes, why the actual hell does my 15 year old 1.8 liter sports car cost $200 to insure with full coverage?!

Because you’re a young dude?

$200 a month for insure (at least in my eyes) isn’t really that bad. Although I’m used to stupidly expensive rates in Ontario.

$200 a month is pretty damn good for a two seat convertible with full coverage.

$200 a month? That’s more than I pay for my M3, and that’s after they doubled my rates cause I put it into my wall and did about 5k worth of damage.

I can guarantee its because you are a young male. Insurance companies are highly regulated as to what they charge (I worked for an for a few months while I was in college), however, that $200 / month is pretty ridiculous. My whole monthly insurance bill is less than that and that includes an ‘09 M3 with full coverage, 2011 Triumph Daytona with full coverage, and my renters policy.

Here’s how to feel better. Go on kanetix.ca, pick an address in Ontario (and in particular Toronto), and enter your details.

...And be amazed that they still even SELL cars in Ontario.

Don’t feel too bad. The insurance on my 11 year old tdi is more per month than the 348. And liability on my Miata is only slightly cheaper than the 348 ¯\_()_/¯

When I was younger, I kept liability insurance on a non-running, non-licensed Ford Pinto wagon because the multi-car discount was actually more than the cost of liability for the wagon. Yes, one car cost more to insure than two. I think it also had something to do with the fact that it also put me as the primary driver on the Pinto and my wife as the primary driver on the other car. Taking the Pinto out of the equation put me - a male under the age of 25 - as the primary driver on the newer car with full coverage, and combination of everything meant that it was cheaper to insure two cars rather than one. That was when I was with State Farm... “Like a good neighbor...” - well, let’s agree to disagree...

Part of the answer is that you are under the age of 25. When I hit 25, my insurance rates dropped by around %30-%40. The other part of your premium is the portion derived by the car you drive and the insurer’s claim experience with the car. This consists of both how much the tends to cost to fix, and perhaps even more importantly, the frequency with which claims are filed for that model. This last part turns out to be important.

The actuaries would tell you that young people crash far more often than older folks (at least until really old age), which means that cars usually driven by younger folks get crashed more often than cars usually driven by older folks. What I’ve learned in practice is that sportier cars usually driven by younger folks can be significantly more expensive to insure than much faster, and even more expensive, cars that tend to be driven by older folks. 20 year olds crash cars all the time. Conversely, 50 or 60 year olds very rarely crash their cars, even if they are really fast cars.

While there are certainly some older car enthusiasts (like my dad) that drive miatas, many a miata is driven by the younger folks, as are Mustangs (especially non-V8 pony cars), Civics (Si or lesser), Foci, WRX, BRZ, ect... It turns out that all of those cars are comparatively expensive to insure. On the other end, “old man” sports cars turn out to be far cheaper to insure than one might expect. Get quotes, for a boxter, a cayman, a 911 or (the granddaddy of old man sports cars) a Corvette, and the premium is often far cheaper than for much slower and less valuable cars. It turns out that miatas, mustangs and civics crash all the time. On the other hand, the average corvette driven is around 60 years old, and they don’t crash them very often. This makes is surprisingly cheap for a 30 year old to insure a vette, or any other number of big boy sports cars that are usually owned by old people.

In my case, the Corvette is the cheapest to insure car I’ve ever owned. As a 32 year old, single male with a clean record and good credit, I pay $76/month for full coverage on the vette. This is with a multi line discount for homeowners insurance, but without a multiple car discount. Dispite owning two cars and insuring them both with State Farm, they are actually insured in different states, so I don’t get the discount because the policies are actually written by different subsidiaries of State Farm. Every car I’ve driven since I was 25 has cost more to insure, including the escalade, legend coupe, E39 and an NB miata. The miata was actually the most expensive car I’ve ever insured after the age of 25.

I’ve gotten quotes from State Farm for various cars in last year or two. A C5 vette would be basically the same sub $80 to insure, a C5 z06 is around $90 and a C6 vette for still under $100/month. Also at right about $100/month would be a Boxter S, early Cayman S or a 996 911. At $125/month would be a 997 or E46 or better M3, an NB/NC miata or a new mazda 3/6. An E39 M5 slots in this price range as well along with a CTS-V. $150/month becomes a new mustang (I got no significant premium difference for different engines, but that might not be the case for sub 25 year olds), a Civic Si ($135 for a lesser civic), focus ST, WRX, BRZ, E60 M5, new 370z or an ND miata. For $175-200 month, it looks I could basically insure anything that isn’t a proper exotic, including a whole bunch of properly fast new cars which cost some multiple of my annual salary that is greater than one, which means I won’t actually even be thinking of owning them until the combination that is the gods of 10-20 year old sports car depreciation and doting original owners do their magic.

Sometimes you have to buy a faster car to save money on insurance. My vette actually gets better fuel mileage than my miata did, too. I think a C5 is the best performance car bang for the buck out there right now. 12k gets you into one, and 15K gets you into a nice C5 with low miles that an old guy waxed more often than he reved it past 3k.
