What do these have in common
EDIT: They all share the same Aisin-Warner Transmission (A340) which was in, pretty much, all the things, including my land cruiser as the A343F. The 90's was a good time to be a transmission maker.

Don’t forget that the Jeep also had an Aisin AX15 5 speed which is the same as the Toyota R150 which is the same as the GM AR5, and the Isuzu MU5.

Yup, I was just learning about the R150, which lead me down this path. Apparently the R150 is a wuss.

Really? I thought it was a good trans in the pickups, 4runners and Supras (R154?). I read that Toyota started using the R151 in their full size Land Cruisers in place of the H150/151 and thats when they started having trouble with them.

yeah, thats the gist of it. The R151 was used in the 1HZ version of the cruisers, but then people started turbocharging them and they started, um, exploding.

Yeah that makes sense. The Jeep and Toyota truck guys absolutely love theirs though, and I’ve got to say its a pretty nice shifting trans. I always thought about buying an Atlas LL8 I6 from a wrecked Trailblazer, a bell housing from a manual Colorado, and a flywheel to mate it all to an R150 or AR5 and mate that somehow to an FJ60 t-case. At the time there was a really nice FJ60 in 70's brown near me that would not pass smog (I’m in CA).

I’ve seen a LL8 swap onto a A442 on mud, looked cool. Its a great choice if you want that same big 6 feel.

Wow I thought I was the only one with the idea since I couldnt find anything after extensive googling. Ill check it out. It’s a GM designed 4.2L I6 so it is a kind of spiritual successor to the 2F.
