This sums up why I think Victory failed ( link for context ):

Harley basically sells you the two-wheeled equivalent of a 1970 Charger 440. Looks for all the world like the Shovelheads they were selling in the ’70s, but doesn’t leak oil, starts every time, and can stop a lot faster. Indian takes that a step further and gives you a modernized two-wheeled equivalent of a ’57 Chevy Bel Air.

Victory? Victory seemed to be offering the equivalent of that Challenger “Shakedown” concept at SEMA and NAIAS 2017. It looks like a ’70 Challenger, but with a lot of modern styling touches and just looks like a tryhard. And the problem is that you could get the same thing from Yamaha, Honda, and Kawasaki.

Let’s hope they can transfer some of that to Indian.

From Steve Menneto of Polaris and Indian Motorcycles

Closing down Victory was a tough decision for us, but it allows investments in Indian to grow in the area of performance,” Menneto told us. “We started to find our customers asking for sportier Indians – they love the heritage style, but they’d like something sportier and with a different look.

“Right now,” Menneto continued, “Indian has been a cruiser/bagger/touring brand. Now there’s nothing constraining Indian to go into new segments of performance and technology.”

This makes it sound pretty promising.

By the sounds of it Indian will slowly pick up where Victory left off, the custom look and Freedom engine might be gone, but it sounds like Indian is going to start doing more of the sporty american cruiser thing.

From Steve Menneto of Polaris and Indian motorcycles.

Now, with Victory out of the picture, Menneto says Indian will be able to develop sportier bikes than just cruisers .

“Closing down Victory was a tough decision for us, but it allows investments in Indian to grow in the area of performance,” Menneto told us. “We started to find our customers asking for sportier Indians – they love the heritage style, but they’d like something sportier and with a different look.

But the Freedom engine is amazing! Harley-Davidson is just now doing with the Milwaukee Eight what Victory did for a decade, and they’re still behind on technology. Not to mention the hugeness and slavish traditionalism of Indians so far... There’s no reason the Scout shouldn’t have had more rear suspension and available mid-set foot controls from day one!

Polaris has a history of saying one thing and doing another - before the Octane disappointed everyone there was the Vision, which previewed as a large sportbike with angled floorboards and debuted as an American Gold Wing.

Ooh LOOK, everybody! It’s the guy who doesn’t like Harley-Davidsons AS LOUDLY AND OFTEN AS POSSIBLE! Tell us again how the best selling bikes in the world are somehow beneath you...

Honda’s the biggest seller worldwide.

The Freedom is a great engine, but it’s nearly a 20 year old design, and with Victory now being shut down I see no reason for Indian to pick up a 20 year old design that doesn’t fit with their image. They’ll likely use the 111, develop a punched out version of the Scout engine (my favorite option) or develop a whole new engine (doubtful IMO) for their newer “sportier” bikes.

I’m not sure I would say the Octane was a say one thing and do another situation. It was more of an awesome concept bike, and several custom concept bikes, then was watered down in order to meet a price point. Overall the Octane is what we though it would be, just minus the really good suspension and brakes.

I’ve never seen the Vision concept, and although I hate the actual Vision, I’m glad they did what they did.

I like the Octane just how it is. Yeah, it could have had better suspension and brakes, more flair, blah blah blah. It was exactly what I wanted, a more aggressive cruiser that I could blast around town on as soon as one came up used and probably develop into something without spending too much more than I paid for it. Now they’re all gonna be goddamned collector’s items and I’ll never find it for any less than it was originally sold for.

And if the Vision had been the exact same as it was, just with the V-shaped floorboards, it would have been a quantum leap in motorcycle technology.

ok, what was so “advanced” about it? 8 valves I’ll give you, but it’s still a long-stroke, under-square engine so its inherent rev ceiling is too low to make the overhead camshafts a factor. The only real tangible difference was the unitized powertrain, but there’s upsides and downsides to that. it certainly didn’t save them much in the way of weight compared to an equivalent size Harley.

But seriously, how about ‘the second - best selling brand once you discount all the Asian commuter sales’? Stop breaking my balls, buddy.
