Ms. Khalbali and I are beginning to seriously consider moving north, and before ya’ll assume, Trump is really just the icing on the cake, neither one of us has felt any patriotic connection to this country in a very long time, and we’re in kind of a bad way at the moment and looking for a fresh start. Any OPPOs have experience with the transition? Ideally we’d love yurup but I think this is the first step at least. Firefly turbo for your time.

as a canadian, I’m going to tell you: prepare for sticker shock. in ontario and vancouver, your insurance rates might go to 10x what you were paying in US (no joke)

My understanding is that foreigners really can’t move to Canada unless you either have a job offer from a company sponsoring you for immigration or have the means to support yourself independently.

it’s cheaper to move to europe than canada currently.

canada seems very expensive/hard to find jobs in

(my partner and myself are moving to Germany next week)

We’re also thinking seriously about making my next expat experience permanent. Britain was my hope until brexit. Now I’m hoping Ireland given my industry.

I looked into moving to Canada about 8 years ago, but decided it was too much of a hassle. Of course, that was back when Harper was still PM.

Wow, I find it kind of ironic it’s harder to move to Canada than the U.S. Damn it Canada, y’all are suppose to be the progressive utopia America could be.

I’m a US citizen living in Canada, although I was born this side of the border, so it’s not quite the same. I haven’t lived south of the 49th since I was really too young to notice major differences, but I’m back and forth enough now that the biggest thing is prices are different here (usually more here, sometimes comically more so), there isn’t anywhere near as many people here, and acceptable distances to drive to go somewhere for the day are longer.

As far as actually moving up here, getting a proper working visa, you basically need to have a job already lined up. Anyone I know who’s gone through the process said it was incredibly difficult. It’s not that we’re unfriendly or unwelcoming, we just want to make sure everyone’s committed.

What part of Canada? Vancouver and Toronto are the most expensive, housing especially. The job markets are also less than brilliant.

Look into getting a visa that will allow you to work here. If that pans out and you find steady work, apply for permanent residency.

Peter already mentioned a few pitfalls but overall Canada is pretty cool. As an immigrant myself, I’m rather happy to be here.

But in MB and SK it’s not so bad, still not great in comparison, but not bad. I currently pay ~$110/mo combined for plates on the MJ and Niva.

plates or insurance?

the plates in ON are CHEAP. I mean the plates for all 4 of our machainces (the BMW, the SV, the Audi and the lexus) are under 400 for the year.

the insurance? less so.

Well it’s both because of socialism. I’d have to dig out paperwork to find the actual breakdown of prices, but if memory serves the plate use charge is something like $10/yr, and registration is ~$150/yr. the rest of the price is in insurance, in my case $300 deductible ($200 on glass replacement and free chip repair), and $2,500,000 liability in both cases. It’s not an even split between the two though, because the MJ is registered as a truck so it’s around $45/mo to the Niva’s passenger vehicle status at around $65/mo. Why trucks cost less to insure is beyond me cause at almost 4000 lbs it’s hella gonna do more damage to anything it hits than the 2600lb Niva, and mine is only a small truck... The same applies to one-tons.

PEI currently has a thing going to attract tech sector workers with the lure of streamlined assisted relocation packages, but there’s no one I’d want to work for up there yet :-/
