I was helping a friend replace the turbo in his ‘03 WRX. It was the turbo-swap from hell; what was supposed to be a Friday evening job turned into a two night event. It took 4 people way too long to do the job. We finally got it finished up and tested by 3am, and I didn’t get to bed until nearly 4am. Then I woke up at 9am; honestly, I’m questioning why...
As is usually the case, there was more wrong than initially thought, but that’s a story for another day.

What made the turbo swap so hard? Rusted bolts? I haven’t done it but seems pretty straightforward

~14 year old PA car with ~140,000 miles; turbo and exhaust never removed before. Also, the uppipe and entire exhaust from the downpipe back had to come off because the precat in the uppipe had exploded (which is what took out the turbo). Additionally, we didn’t have access to a lift, which would have made all of the removal and installation of exhaust components much easier.
If it was just swapping the turbo, we would have been done Friday evening.

The guy driving the WRX in your picture might be the least WRX-Driver-looking WRX Driver I’ve ever seen. I think he’d be more at home on a steam locomotive.

That’s an interesting observation; I didn’t notice that when I found the photo!
Speaking of steam trains, the WRX looked like a steam train from all of the coolant we dumped from removing the turbo coolant lines. Also, lots of penetrating oil burning off...

oh lord, and that’s why people swap in the sti up pipes, putting a catalyst before the turbo is just a terrible idea
