Drove by these guys late at night with a fussy baby, so I didn’t have time to stop. But I came back today. Lada Samara galore!
Good to know I can still successfully identify obscure cars by brief glimpses in the middle of the night. These have just started arriving at this odd sketch place I drive by.

There’s a ‘95 pretty well complete, just a few dents and a smashed windshield, and some interior decay, sitting at a wrecking yard near me. Unlike all the other wheel-less cars, it’s still got tires on it, and looks like it was just parallel parked there one day. I keep thinking I should ask the yard about it, but if they give me a number any less than $1000 for it I know she’ll come home with me... And I’ve already got three projects.
Horrible dumbphone pic from 2014. Interestingly there’s a PEI inspection sticker on it from ‘99, despite MB plates (and it being in MB) so this thing’s travelled.

Fun Fact:
If you happened to get a “western export” Samara (different battery, tires, and some other minute details) it would fetch 100K Marks on the second hand market in the GDR (a.k.a. East Germany). That would have been enough to buy a house!
The “eastern” version still was enough to pay off most of that house instantly.
In a market where you had to wait 10+ years for a new car, the moment you drove it off the delivery place the price went through the roof. And this was one of the first “modern” cars. Like the Skoda it had a hatchback!

There are two VERY large obstacles to that right now.
1. The Niva currently doesn’t run or drive.
2. I don’t live in SK any more.
1 I’m hoping to address this coming week... still planning on taking it to the Lemons Rally, Retreat from Moscow to Paris, leaving FRIDAY AHHHH! It’s got the major components back in now, it’s just all the little fiddly bits. 2. I’m planning to address this summer, as I’m interviewing (remotely thank god) for a job with Jasper NP on FRIDAY AHHHH! But I moved back to MB about... not quite two years ago.
