Why aren't there reasonably priced cars shaped like Ferraris?

Kinja'd!!!

Came across this Ask HN on YCombinator, seems like a good discussion for Oppo.

Why do we get monstrosities like the Juke and the new Camry when mainstream manufacturers go “bold”?

I would say the Fiero was gone for reasons beyond its looks.

because they wouldn’t sell. low-slung, low roof, and (probably) two seats means uncomfortable to get into, out of, and inconvenient to live with day to day. The only way people will put up with that is if it’s stonking fast and/or from a prestigious brand. This industry is so cut-throat you basically can’t afford to waste effort on something which will sell in small amounts. that is, unless you can charge premium pricing to offset the low volume.

now, as for why things like the Juke and Camry look the way they do, that’s more due to their stylists confusing “weird” with “exciting.”

A car like the Honda S660 comes somewhat close.(more like a mini NSX, but you get the point)

I think the reason there are no Ferrari shaped reasonably priced cars is that to make a car reasonably priced, you need to sell a lot of them, which is easier to do with a car that appeals to a lot of people, not just to car people. And since most non car people prefer a car to be practical, cars are made as practical as possible. However practicality doesn’t really pair with being Ferrari shaped.

mid engine also costs more to assemble and limits cargo capacity.

1 Ferrari has well paid lawyer to protect their IP. 2, People want Ferrari’s for their performance and exclusivity, (most of them these days are not very good looking) So anyone parting with their money for said car is going to have to live with the shame of having an ugly, poor performing knock off, that everyone will know is a cheap knock off. Think of how in the world of Porsches the Boxster, and before that the 944/924 and before that 914, left you with the, so you can’t afford a 911 stigma. And that’s an actually Porsche. 3, Ferraris, and this would apply to a knock off, are like a boat. Better to know someone with one, than to own one. A knock off might avoid the high cost of maintenance, but would likely still be miserable to live with.
