!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I had no idea you could “mod” guns to make them more accurate apart from lightening the trigger pull. Although that doesn’t make them more accurate technically speaking.

Maybe I’ll get a Mosin Nagant to keep me busy until I have my own garage.

PS If you wanna get technical, I guess it’s more like chassis stiffness for guns, but whatever.

TL;DW He pours some magic juice in there that hardens and holds the barrel more securely in place.

Mosins are fun. Very rugged, have to get half way decent ammo for it though or the shells will expand and you have to use a mallet to open the breach. You can use surplus stuff, just don’t use the silver tipped Albanian ammo.

More modern guns with more modular designs do have plenty of aftermarket, but this is certainly a more clever way of improving older rifles.

I thought one wanted the least amount of contact between the stock and barrel.

Have used the silver-tip surplus. Are steel-core, will go through EVERYTHING.

Also sometimes require using a mallet to get the bolt pulled back.

Should probably get some silver tipped ammo anyways, in case of werewolfs :)

At the bottom it mentions the exact process in the video, for older rifles. Because the free floating barrels still touch the stock at the receiver (where the procedure in the video is being done.) The free floating just means the length of the barrel itself (past the chamber.)

Ah, eric (iraqiveteran8888). The master of mosin nagant bubbasmithing.

Somedays I want to refinish my mosin-nagant... but then I wake up and realize its better off just shooting as-is.

“Chassis stiffness” is a good way to put it.

Part if the problem with handguns is that you need to hold them loose enough that you don’t pull down as you shoot, but you have to hold them tight enough that they don’t Jam. This is part of that. Because of the small amount of parts holding a hide force, if you don’t hold the handgun tight it will Jam when retrieving the next round(this has happened to me when trying to be loose with Glocks, S&Ws, and Springfields(what I have). I’m imagining this is the same concept.

Depending on the barrel profile, having the barrel contacting the stock at a certain point might be beneficial. A thin barrel flexes enough to negatively affect accuracy, so wedging it in place at the end of the barrel helps cut down on the flex. Example:

http://www.theboxotruth.com/educational-zone-63-corking-a-mosin-rifle-to-improve-accuracy/

The downside is that if the stock expands and contracts due to the temperature or humidity changes, the point of impact changes as well due to increased (or decreased) load on the end of the barrel.

If you have a big ass barrel that’s stiff enough to not flex as much, free floating is the way to go.

The technical term is called ‘barrel harmonics.’ With a long enough barrel, the shock of the powder explosion can let the barrel flex enough move the shot. And the Mosin definitely has a long enough barrel for that. So it is true that free-float is best, but harmonics do come into play.
