This day certainly took an unexpected turn.

Kinja'd!!!

RIP, Toyota Sienna. You were the best minivan I could imagine. My kids called it the “land yacht.” Pour one out, Oppo.

Sadly, the accident was my wife’s fault. She did not see a stop sign on a country road and hit a large pickup. Fortunately, he was wearing a seat belt and she hit him on the passenger side. No one was hurt, but as you can see, full airbag deployment. Sienna is dunzo. She thinks I am upset that she caused this accident.

This is why we have insurance. A car can be replaced, she can’t be. I can’t be upset. I am so relieved that she is ok; we will figure out the rest. I am more upset that I cracked a molar while I was typing this and am going to need some dental work.

Ok Oppo, get started. I have good credit and make pretty good money. My wife is a special education teacher with about a 20-30 minute commute. We have 2 teen boys (almost 16 and just turned 13). We like family road trips (we are doing Grand Canyon in April) and Toby, who weighs 30-35 lbs, travels with us.

We loved the Sienna for its space and versatility, as we had removable reclining captain’s chairs in the back.

AWD was a great bonus for winter adventures (we live a little over an hour from Yosemite).

The van was handy for moving my Halloween stuff back and forth to storage.

What should be my wife’s next vehicle?

As boring as they can be nothing is as versital as a minivan. My family was Chysler vans fans long after the need to haul lots of people was gone. If my mother was still alive there’d be one in her garage today. Dad and I like sedans.

Get a time machine then go into the future and buy the new VW EV Micro bus when it comes out. Come back to the current time, buy a small trailer that’ll fit a generator plus some extra stuff. On top of all that you’ll get a killer deal of no payments for the first five years!

Another Sienna? If you (and the family) liked them so much, why not get another? Nothing wrong with getting the same car again.

Minivans are generally cheaper and more useful than their 7 passenger SUV equivalents. If I was going to buy a new minivan right now it would probably be the Odyssey over the Sienna but the preference in toys between them is largely personal.

May I suggest a used GX 460? Not great on gas, but they can basically run forever.

Damn! Glad to here all that was lost was replaceable. Just spent a week in the new pacifica and it wasn’t to shabby at all though I’m weary of 1st year release with an added weariness because dodge (we own a caravan).. my parents just took delivery of the Kia minivan and it’s pretty decent though they’ve only owned it for a few days so time will have to tell on that. Honestly the quest stinks imo so that leaves Honda and Toyota. I’d take the yota if I could afford new right this minute and since you obviously have some love for Toyota and one just basically saved your love one from a possible bad situation if I were in your shoes it’d be hard not to favor them. good luck and hope all is well.

I was going to argue in favor of the Previa here, but then it occurred to me that given the circumstances here, maybe the Previa is not the car you wanted:

Like you said, cars can be replaced, wifes can’t. Glad to hear that everyone is ok. If you liked the van you should take a look at another van. Or maybe you can look at some more SUV/crossover options like a CX-9.

everyone walked away so thats all that is important.

I would say another sienna or maybe an odyssey.

A 4runner is nice and well built but it wont have the amazing interior volume that a minivan offers.

Hmmmmm, are you sure FWD and snow tires aren’t enough? I can’t say since we live in the Bay Area and only travel in the summer but choosing AWD limits yourself to just the Sienna and I’m not sure if there are any in the price range that you’re comfortable with. If there are then by all means I say go Sienna again, otherwise take a look at the Ody (ugly but safe) and the Sedona (not as practical, but still pretty safe). Avoid the old Sedona, the Quest, and the pre-Pacifica Mopars; those are not what you want to have your wife driving if something like this happens (not saying it will happen again, but still). SUVs are worthless unless you really need some snow-fording ground clearance on a regular basis since, as Clarkson put it, it’s like clomping around in skis all year because you go skiing in February. Better to just get a FWD van and rent something if you need occasional AWD (like we rented an Infiniti QX60 when we went to Mono Lake which managed to get us to Lake Crowley and back despite the truly tragic CVT...)

Glad to hear she’s Ok! I know you have an Infiniti... what about a QX60? The build quality of the Pathfinder twin is deplorable (as in everything on the interior falling apart by 15,000 miles), but the vehicle is nicely packaged for family hauls. I haven’t been in the Infiniti version, just he Nissan, but I would think the Infiniti is better put together. The price isn’t too nuts either - with AWD it is something like $45k which isn’t much more than an AWD Sienna XLE.

I have a 2014 pathfinder SL tech and had no problems what so ever, and for those who have fears about the CVT the warranty on the transmission is 7 years instead of just 5 like when I bought it. So i’m ok until 2021.

What problems about th interior are you talking about? And was it a S, SV, SL or a platinum?

Nothing is falling apart on mine, and nothing looks like it’s about to.

The thing I hate about it is the GPS, since you have to pay 150us to update it with the Nissan DVDs.

I think it was an SV. Trim falling off, rattles everywhere, tears in seat fabric, labels worn off of the buttons, power mirrors didn’t work. Might have been a 2013 with first year issues.

As for a recommendation, I say the new GMC Acadia. 3 rows of seats (unless you get the All Terrain,) available AWD, punchy V6 (or thrifty I4 if you want to go that route,) wonderfully appointed interior, available 2nd row captains chairs, and all the modern gadgets and safety wizardry.

Glad she’s OK. Like you said, cars car be replaced.

I rented a car for a small road trip about two years ago now, and I was pissed the rental company stuck me with a Tahoe. Then the weirdest thing happened ... I completely fell in love with it. It rode like a dream, had plenty of power and a nice V8 growl, plenty of room. I’ve wanted one in a big bad way ever since.
