Kinja'd!!!

Right now I live with my parents as I am currently unemployed, and I hate it. It’s so hard to be back home after being on my own and finically independent in another state 1000 miles away. I’ve been here at home since mid-July and since about mid-August have not been happy about it. I know I just need to find another job, but that has not been easy. I’ve had several interviews, but nothing. It seems no one really wants to hire a ChemE with 3 years of frac experience. I’m hoping my luck changes soon. I completely redid my resume in November and that seems to have attracted more attention. I know it takes time, but I want out now. I want to be back on my own, fuck this.

I feel for you. I was laid off and out of work for 8 months. It sucked. I had to move three states away to get into a good job. Best of luck, my friend.

I was a master tech there at North Park Lexus off San Pedro and 410 north loop for 4 years. We got super slow and I had to leave my job and rad 2 bedroom apartment to go back home with mom & pop. I had to sell my e36 M3 so I could consciously feel at little better for using their electricity and eating their food. Huge profit doe. Bought for $1,900 and sold for $6,500. Handed my mom the cash. I ended up back to work in the automotive field 8 months later. It was mega tough dude but this thing will turn around, it always does.

That dealer is 3.5 miles from where I used to live.

I guess I don’t feel bad about living on my parents dime. I cook a lot, so they pay for the food but get a home cooked meal. They’re also not hurting for money, which is nice. My dad isn’t pushing me to sell my car. I remember when layoffs started he asked me if I had enough money to pay off my car if I got laid off. It’ll turn around, it just takes time.

Did you go for your masters? IIRC, we’re around the same age and I finished my bachelors in fall 2012.

It’s really hard to get a job if you don’t know someone. All the interviews I’ve had recently have been because I got through all the online screenings. I had two interviews because of people I knew, one I didn’t really want the job the other my friend got fired and yeah they never got back to me.

That’s not a bad idea, I’d have to look into what kind of tests I’d need to take to get certified.

Honestly, I think I think I want to be a process engineer, whether that’s feasible or not is to be seen. I’ve had a couple interviews for jobs as a process engineer and I’ve gotten closer there than I have anywhere else.

Unfortunately no. We do have an opening for a ChemE in our batch reactor plant though. Was an old mom and pop chemical plant that got bought by a fairly large chemical company and we working on improving the site. Lots of stuff happening but no time to teach. If you are fairly earlier in your career get a job at Dow’s reaction engineering department in Midland, MI as an intern. That will give you enough diverse experience to walk in anywhere with a leg up on the competition.

Lots of golf, fancy hotels, free food, and free beer. Most importantly you get to see a lot of plants and make really good networks. Plus a company car usually. I can’t count how many people have called me begging for me to come work for them after I visited their site (I am a technical consultant for our chemical company that often travels with the sales team). Look at distributors such as IMCD, Brenntag, Univar, Palmer-Holland. They will usually hire someone with no industry sector specialization as long as you have a Chem/ChemE degree.

And find all the recruiters in those fields.

I was just starting to get better and actually start caring about my job and other things again, and then I got laid off. That kinda fucked everything up; I was doing pretty good for myself out in Texas. Gave all that up and moved back home, it’s really hard to be back home after living on my own for 3 years let along 7. I don’t think going after a friend that worked there helped, I felt like I couldn’t escape work since it felt like my job was my life.
