Kinja'd!!!

For me it was this 320i. Normally a 320i isn’t exciting at all; however, this one was a little different.

I had taken my car to BMW of Corpus Christi for an alignment or something like that. I had just gotten off of night shift and had made the appointment when I was in the field and I requested a loaner; I just wanted to go back to my apartment and sleep. So I bring my car in and when the service guy starts looking for a loaner for me. That’s when he says, your car is a manual right? Of course it is. Well do you want the manual loaner? For a minute I’m kinda shocked, a manual loaner? Yes please, I didn’t even realize that a manual loaner was still a thing. This dealer seemed to be run by car people. I was talking to the service guy and apparently a few years before that they had a manual X3 loaner. This car was pretty well equipped, maybe it sat around for a while before it was pressed into loaner service.

So in a world of boring loaners, what’s the most interesting thing you’ve gotten as a loaner?

My most interesting loaner was a 1986 Volvo 740 Turbo, manual (4-speed with overdrive), 1/2 cage, boost turned up, IPD/Koni suspension, straight pipe, limited slip. It was the shop’s old hill-climb car, it got pressed into loaner duty on occasion for those customers who the shop owner deemed could be trusted with it. It was beat to hell and back, the engine was very lose and smokey, but it was still quite entertaining.

United BMW always gave me Enterprise rentals. Sadly the best one was a Maxima (the one with the funny sunroof)

My Ex did get a Boxster once.

Technically not my loaner, but it was most certainly “interesting”.

Quite a few years ago, friend took his 325i in for service, and he got a E90 328i xDrive with a manual as a loaner. This was before I learned how to drive a manual, end up stalling at a left turn and got back out.

Ending to the story though, when it was one of my friend’s turn, he mis-shifted it on the highway, end up blowing the engine. Barely had enough power left to get to an offramp and off the highway to wait for a flatbed.

I suspected, however, the engine was already partially blown before we got it, it smell funny when it was my turn. And no, it was not the clutch.

They gave us a Civic from the local Enterprise or something when our Odyssey was in the shop. I didn’t even think rental companies would willingly buy Hondas of their own accord, but apparently the local dealer forced them to. Odd.

Nothing too crazy for me. The first time I took my Outback in for warranty work, I got a base Santa Fe Sport from the Subaru dealers sister dealer. Second time I got a loaded Outback. Probably the weirdest loaner I’ve gotten was when I took my moms 2013 Volvo XC60 T6 in for an oil change and warranty work. Went in expecting a brand new Volvo from the dealer, left with a 1999 Volvo S70.

Yep. Turns out that dealer puts their old overpriced used cars into the loaner fleet with a couple of new ones thrown in. I’m sure it saves them a huge amount on depreciation. Their fleet is probably 85% 10+ year old volvos, 15% new ones. It was just quite a shocker at the time to be dropping off a brand new SUV with less than 10k miles and getting a 14 year old car with over 150k miles.

I guess the one redeeming quality was that it was pretty mint, aside from an interior that reeked of cig smoke.

Brought the S60 in? Get an S80.

Back around 2004ish my parents bought a new Defender which, surprisingly, had major electrical issues and would go into limp mode all the time. If it was at the dealer then we’d get an old Freelander, if it was recovered by Landrover we’d get an enterprise rental delivered.

We had a Vauxhall (AKA Saturn) Astra, Vauxhall Zafira (AKA Fireball of death) and after waiting ages for a car to arrive, an EP3 Civic Type R. Apparently that was the highest class car they had available, so that’s what we got.

You may have noticed that none of these are really a comparable vehicle.

We eventually got LR to replace it with a new build model, so the dealer lent us a new TD4 Freelander for a couple of months. When the new Defender was ready they were surprised to receive the keys back as they had no record of us having it.  It had nice Alcantara seats, and may have done a Road Rally...

As a European, its a tie between a GMC Yukon (during my 2 week holiday in Miami) and our Mazda Flair in Japan.

The Yukon was just.......f*ckin awesome. In sheer terms of the way it sounded, the way it looked (we had it parked next to a BMW X5 and it made the X5 look like a Mini).....

The Mazda because it was just a weird car. It worked great for a city like Tokio. In general, I’d never even opt to own a car like that, but for the city we were in, it just worked so damn good.

I guess I should have specified that loaner meant a car you got from a dealer when your car was in service. In the US, we’d call the cars as you described rentals.

But yeah, it’s always cool to drive cars that you don’t get in your own market. I had a Mercedes B180 when I was in Germany in 2013. I really liked it, best part was it was a manual; and it was before I had mine own manual. Good luck finding a manual rental car in the US.

I’ve never rented a car so it was the closest I had to share. I was upset when she sold it for $6k with only 60k miles on it to someone and didn’t offer it to me first, but if I had bought it, I most likely wouldn’t be in the car I have now. I absolutely love my 328i (just wish it had ventilated seats) and I’ve loved BMWs since I was a kid.

The person she sold it to is trying to sell it now and I imagine it’s because those eletrical gremlins the LS suffers are starting to show their face.

Btw, are you close to Beaumont? Or further west? I’d love to ride in a M car. I’m actually from Louisiana and none of my friends are interested in cars so no one has something interesting for me to see for myself.
