Chapter 1: The part where somehow the transmission linkage was fucked up
In a hole in the side of the engine lived a bushing sleeve. Not a greasy, nylon-bushed hole, filled with the ends of a clutch Z-bar, nor yet a dry, bare hole with parts available on RockAuto: it was a Cruise-O-Matic transfer linkage hole, which means comfort.

Kinja'd!!!

Or it would if the end of the transfer bar hadn’t apparently disintegrated whatever retaining ring and/or who knows what the fuck that was supposed to be on the side of the engine, and was floating free in a 1/8" too big hole in a steel sleeve that was too short and popping out EVERYTIME SHIFTING AND NOT FUCKING SHIFTING RWARGARBL. Ahem. Anyway I brazed a brass tube onto the old piece and added a grease zerk. Cool story, right?

Seriously, I can’t even find out what the engine side bushing/retainer is supposed to look like or find it anywhere online. Apparently everybody drives stick or had an attack of LAWLS C4 TIEM about 40 years ago. Also, I have now inspected the front brakes, got the left front which was sticky unsticky, inspected the front bearings on one side because CAPTIVE DRUM LOL, and am now set up to R/R the upper ball joints. 98,000 miles, 54 years, need new. WHO COULD HAVE FORESEEN THIS?

I was thinking about your car(s) on the way home, wondering the latest battle. This is more a limited skirmish. Weird there are no parts though, that is really surprising.

Also, speaking of barges

It’s a bit too... I don’t know what. New? Yellow? Not for me, really.

I get what you mean. Somehow it doesn’t hit the exact right note. There are post ‘70 Fords I’m totally on board with, but this isn’t one of them.

Spoiler: Chapter 2 this morning will involve upper ball joints and road testing the trans.

Chapter 2: Roast Mountings*
Between the time when the brakes drank a bottle of Prestone and the grease of the drums with bearing race, there was an age undreamed of. And unto this, Ramblin, destined to turn the filthed frown of Aquilonia upon his giant scow. It is I, his chronicler, who alone can tell thee of his saga. Let me tell you of the days of high adventure!

(*Roast Mutton is the second chapter of The Hobbit, but I needed to quote Conan the Barbarian instead because of reasons)

Okay, quick summary: I set it on the lift yesterday so I could do the upper ball joints. Still riveted in place (not bolted), so the original ones. The rubber max-extent bumpers have a bolt through the ball joints as well, so if I was smart I would have tried to use a wrench on those first despite them being shot. I was not smart. Anyway, the rivets didn’t want to chisel off easily, so I used the torch this morning, which set fire to 50 years of grease and the remains of the rubber bump stop. DURRR. I got the ball joints replaced, and had greased a bearing/checked a hub yesterday, so I knew the brake surfaces themselves weren’t bad - I took it onto the small road for a test drive. Shifting properly (!) still occasionally sticking on the left front, rolled into neighbor’s driveway. Talked to them, tried to leave, and left front locked solid.

Okay, fuck this noise. A little bit of forward and backward and it was unstuck, but due to... ? maybe the engine moving too much on the mounts, the trans bushing jumped out. Drive, neutral, reverse only (again), but enough to get back to the shop. Time to do front brakes and *improve* the bushing.

Kinja'd!!!

Bushing first (above as with brass added) - fixed it by... adding a nut to space out the threads another 1/4". Go me.

So, brakes. New front wheel cylinders, new front flex lines, fresh fluid, bleed the system. I’m done, already ,even with a trip into town, because 1960s American cars are roughly as hard to work on as a lawn mower. Shifting also functioning properly.

If the windshield wipers work, it may now actually be ready to tag. In NC, a non-operative vehicle title requires an inspection to become a pretty butterfly become an operating vehicle, but as far as operating vs. title is concerned, I don’t think it’s ever been officially off the road, so it very possibly doesn’t need one. I don’t remember.

I’ll make a full post with pictures of the grease on fire at some point.

That’s a helluva saga. I’ve no doubt Arnold would play you in the movie adaption if he were younger. So, old cars may be relatively easy to work on, but I wouldn’t have thought all the necessary parts would be so easily available to totally redo the brakes like that. I guess so.

Well done!

See, the ease of repair is so, so important to me. A little fire, a little swearing, and we’re good to go.
