The majority of production is now overseas save for high-end custom orders, but the factory legacy endures in the well-built products that are still out there. Words can’t explain how thankful I am to them, whoever and wherever they are, so here are some pictures that show it has been and continues to be used as intended.

My Chinese built Specialized is damn good though, a little heavy but good. I haven’t riden a newer bike that felt as solid

I actually initially picked it figuring no one would bother trying to steal a purple bike. Had to replace one halfway sawn-through Kryptonite lock the first year I had it.

And somewhere down in my basement is the box of parts that was once my 2000 Cannondale H300. When I helped start a company back in the dot com boom I couldn’t justify driving the one mile to the office, so I picked this up for the commute. Every year for the last couple of years I keep saying that I’ll unbox it and start riding again as soon as spring hits, but like so many projects I keep putting it off. Someday...

A PA-made Canondale is on my bucket list. I’ve always lusted after that Caffeine F29 hardtail with the Lefty up front that was made there until 2007 or so until getting pushed overseas.

I had a 1994 trek 8700, frame broke in 1 year. Replaced with 1995 trek 990, lasted for 25 years.

Specialized puts together a solid product no matter where it is from. They’ve been doing China and Taiwan a lot longer than some of the other US-based bike companies and it shows. I think most of frames from there are actually made by Merida (who has owned 49% of Specialized since 2001 and may have contracted to them before that) and Giant. There are some crap bikes made in China. Specialized are generally not among them.

8700 was carbon, right? I’ve heard some horror stories of 90's carbon frames breaking quick, even from high-end brands. A buddy of mine broke a Felt carbon road bike within 2 years. Can blame you for going to steel after that. And those Trek 9xx steel frames may outlast humanity.

Yes the 8700 was a carbon tube frame with aluminum lugs, glued together. The 990 was one of the last made in the USA trek frames, tig welded true temper OXIII steel and heat treated. I sold it last summer for $300, here is a photo pre-sale. I kept the soft ride flex stem.

I’m currently riding a specialized Fuse Carbon.

Mine turns 25 next year. I haven’t owned it that long though, I bought it off of CL for next to nothing thanks to the fact that at the time it wore 22 year old tires, brakes, grips, and saddle.

I still have all of the original parts in a box in my basement, but i wanted a solid bike to use around town.

The greatest thing to this bike is that I don’t worry about it when I lock it somewhere and it means my MTB and road bike can be kept the way I want them without having to compromise them for errand-running.

There is nothing that feels as well-built as an early-90s (grunge era) rigid mountain bike.

I’m not the first owner of mine either, but I’ve had it for over 10 years. I also got it to put the single speed kit on and be a zero f’s given around town bike when I was in grad school. It did that well, but it was too good to pass on and I’ve made a few more changes and ridden light trails with it for the 8+ years I’ve been in TX.

I’m not a huge Lefty fan, but that’s really just because I’m an angry old man who’s resistant to change! Shit, maybe that means I’m the one who should be riding an old Trek and you should be on an old dually Canondale!

Awesome.

I put a set of RiBMos on mine and use it to commute, or do slower paced tours. It’s great.

This fall I started riding with my boys to their elementary school on the days I WFH. This winter I got in contact with our local SRTS group and hopefully we will be able to establish a bike-train by the end of the spring.

More Bikes more places!

God I wish I lived somewhere I bike/walk to school with my kids. That’s something I had growing up that I miss. Alas, school is on the other side of a four-lane divided highway with no signal so that’s not happening (On the other side they can and do walk and bike to school, but the houses are $100k more expensive there.) We do have lots of bike lanes and greenways here. They’re still learning to ride (4 & 7) but I hope to get on them soon. Like you said more people commute by bike the more places we’ll have to safely do it!
