Oppo -

After a recent (and unexpected) shake-up in my employment status, I now find myself back in the job market. I was doing Retained Executive Search as an Associate at a boutique national retained search firm, and before that was in the IT Recruiting space (#FirstJob). I’m taking this head-on as an opportunity to go out and explore my options; I want to do something in a field that I am passionate about, and, like many of you, I am extremely passionate about cars and the auto industry.

I am currently based in MN but I think this is an awesome opportunity to try a new place for a little bit (if anyone has done this/currently is doing this, would love to hear from you!), I turn 24 in 2 weeks, and I have a dual degree in Accounting & Entrepreneurship from Washington University in St. Louis. I am not interested in going into accounting as a profession, but other than that am open to any and all suggestions for jobs in the automotive/related industries where I can best leverage my skills and experience.

I’ve always had a knack for being able to connect/communicate with people, so I’ve gravitated towards customer-facing positions so far in my professional life (sales & marketing intern at a start-up, Management Trainee internship at Enterprise, recruiting/executive search), but again am open to all suggestions. I have scrolled through LinkedIn and have seen some interesting positions within the auto industry, but would love to open it up to suggestions from the Oppo community. Thanks in advance for your thoughts and ideas!

I’d recommend looking for positions at LinkedIn. They have an office in downtown Chicago, which is a fun spot and not a far move for you. I know a few people who work there, including my cousin’s wife, and they all seem to love it. I’ve actually handed my resume off to my cousin-in-law for her to pass along to a recruiter there. Sounds like an awesome place to work, and they have offices all over the country if Chicago isn’t your jam.

My only advice is make sure you do research on any startup you consider. It is really easy to get burned by a startup. However, the good ones are usually awesome to work for.

talk to local shops, maybe theres a larger independent body shop you could pull dual positions as a whateverthefuckyoudo and work in the shop. what about dealers? maybe a parts store, something better than an autozone. go swing a hammer for a while and get some exercise being a human forklift. be a buttplug. I’m sure there is someone on Craigslist that will hire you. (JK)

I dont have any valuable tips as far as jobs go (Im in Europe..:(..) but as far as moving to a different place for your job, I did the exact same thing when I was 24 (right after school). I had lived with my parents up until then, so it was really going on my own immediately.

It all happened on the double actually, I didn’t even have time to properly sit down and experience the fact that I moved out. My workplace was about 200km’s from my parents place, I had to really find a place quickly and move in asap.

The way I did it was, finding a furnished rental place (I didnt have my own stuff) and renting it. I was not sure about the job (it was a flex-contract through a job agency), but I had a stable income and could support myself.

As far as living on your own goes, in a different place, socializing, for me anyways, happened mostly through work. I did interact with my neighbours a lot, but there was a 50 years age difference there, so not much socializing going on. Through work however, I went out quite a lot, had some house parties and such, it was quite awesome. I lived there on my own, with pretty much everything (friends, family) 200km’s away from me.

Sure, you make new friends when you move, but the first period can be hard. It kinda depends on your character too, I didnt really feel homesick or missed my friends, I was keeping my focus on work and my personality is kinda weird, in the sense that I can entertain myself pretty easily (xbox, going for a drive, going to the gym etc).

Moved from MI to NC at 28. Best decision of my life. If you have the funds go on a couple week road trip to see where you might like to live. Eat PB&J, sleep at rest stops in the car, and shower at truck stops to conserve cash.
