In today's history of oppo, let's talk about something that originated on oppo, the SR20 rule

We’ve talked about stars , heart clicks , and GTFAC . Now, let’s talk about the SR20 rule, since MR2_FTW asked for it . Also, I googled the SR20 rule and didn’t see a dedicated post to it’s origin, so I figured I’d make one.

In fact the SR20 rule has nothing to do with the Nissan SR20 engine, it has to do with a commenter.

Back in 2011, we had a commenter, sr20spitfirehotrod - King of Bastardization!, claim to get a V8 Lotus Espirt. He’d make posts about it from time to time, but never with any pictures; pretty sure he always had a convenient excuse.

Then one day he writes a story about how he, never mind I’ll let him tell it:

Eventually, he gets called out and is unable to prove that he actually got the Lotus. An Oppositelock shit storm ensues. He confesses and left in shame; at some point he did apologize and come back for a little. Not sure why he left again, probably left with the mass exodus to G+ (thanks Klaus Schmoll).

So yeah, basically if you make a claim and instead of “pics or it didn’t happen” it’s the SR20 rule. In honor of a former opponaut who made a false claim.

The Daily Hoon has pretty much the same version of the story.

I should point out that Jalopnik tired to eradicate this story from the internet; however, once it’s on the internet, it’s pretty much on there for good. I never took a screen shot of this, unlike with GTFAC. I was able to find it by googling “how commenting on Jalopnik can get you out of a speeding ticket” which lead me here . I then had the info, the post ID number, I needed to use the wayback machine to find an archival entry of the article.

I believe Snapundersteer has met him in person; which if I’ve got anything wrong, feel free to correct me.

For those of you just learning about this, feel free to use the SR20 rule when someone makes an outlandish claim, like some family member bought some crazy car.

He didn’t leave because of ridicule. He rode that out and at some point people got bored of it. He left during one of the many comment system changes together with a bunch of other senior commenters who migrated to G+. He is still active there and is apparently successful as a salesman for used high end cars and collects rare sneakers, but it’s hard to believe anything after that Lotus disaster.

Actually. That’s not totally the best thing. I generally don’t like to brag too much, but I got him last year in a secret Santa group we both belong to. And I was going to the city he lives in now in the beginning of December. So I hand delivered his gift, which consisted of:

An SR20 valve cover tshirt and a blue esprit toy car (and a pair of blipshift magnetic race track packs).

He thought it was the best thing. The look on his face was worth all of it.
