Kinja'd!!!

The owner cut a path closer to it, so I checked it out. It’s very far gone. I might take my actual camera out there at some point.

The bottom two inches of body and a lot of the frame are gone. It’s not getting saved.

Punny. But the engine developed a hole in the block, so they parked it in the 60's.

At some point, maybe, but as far as I know it was my neighbors first car.

Did you happen to peek inside? Would it happen to have three pedals? My Packard’s transmission is slightly busted, so I’m a bit interested...

I didn’t, but it was parked because the trans was going and the block was holed.

Maybe it had an Ultramatic then. Those had reliability issues.

I have a missing tooth in my 2nd gear so I have to skip that gear. A bit tricky to drive like that.

you cant keep working for free. charity is great, but you gotta keep the lights on too. sometimes yo gotta charge the “shop rate” too..........

that car looks to be near all there. shouldnt take that much in all honesty. make a nice body donor if nothing else....... we can make him better than he was. better, stronger, faster.......

I like the idea of building to a challenge - period tech perfected, that kind of thing. Basically, build it like a money-no-object rework in ‘62 *could* have been. As a ‘52, it’s got a straight eight - so rebuild it with more modern compression, up the displacement, forged crank (hell of a way to solve crank whip), F-head or OHV adaption, etc. etc. Custom frame if the frame’s gone, Lincoln style trailing arm rear on coils, swaybar add on the front or other rework, aluminum doors, hood, bumpers, but redo the interior like factory but lightweight.

Race drums, limited slip, and you have a Packard that’s like an upgraded mid-50s racing Lincoln crossed with a racing Hudson and with Packard sauce. What a blast!

If I can found a replacement gears, it should be possible. I have found the cluster gear from eBay but the counter gear assembly that’s the one with the actual missing tooth is harder to find. The cluster gear is likely damaged too but it cannot be seen without taking the box apart.

Suitable donor transmission wouldn’t actually be really rare but annoyingly often eBay sellers don’t know really well where are their parts from. Nearly anything with the same R11 overdrive unit (expect the limos and hearses) would have the same part.

that kind of thinking has always been fun, especially when you start capping years, and building to specifics.

throw a vertex magneto at it, multiple carbs, sway bars all the way around..... corvette, was already on the scene, so super thick hand laid fiberglass panels for the hood fenders, and trunk. on second thought, that aluminium would sure polish up nice for fenders. hammer up some thin stainless lookalike bumpers. so many fun possibilities
