Maui is full of cars that have been set on fire. Why?

Last week, I went on an amazing vacation to Hawaii. Maui was by far my favorite island, and the most beautiful, but one thing struck me as odd. There are cars left on the side of the road. Cars that have been torched. And they’re everywhere.

This was a Mk4 Jetta wagon once:

This was a Toyota Sienna, maybe? Anyway it’s a minivan:

Looks like the cab of this pickup burned up, leaving the bed intact:

I also saw a burned-out Explorer further down the road, and later on spotted an incinerated Focus hatchback down in the high-rent district, of all places. Like, less than a mile from the Four Seasons.

What do you think? Stolen, stripped for parts, and torched? Vandalized by kids? Insurance fraud? It was weird to keep seeing this throughout the island.

Nope, this wasn’t anywhere near volcanic activity. Especially the car in front of the Four Seasons.

Its easier and cheaper to torch and abandon it than try to get it off the island. Not too many junk yards in Hawaii.

The burnt Sienna is probably just some Crayola fanboi ’ s art car project.

That tow stickers on them leads me to believe that they were driven there by their owners and torched. Also doesn’t look like they were stripped of parts, meaning that they’re more than likely not stolen. Well, if they were stolen, then they weren’t stolen for parts.

Someone else was on track with this, but I wanted to reply directly to you to keep it simple. I lived on Maui for a bit, although this was 10 years ago now. However, I saw the same thing. There were roads down old sugar cane and pineapple fields that we took to surf spots (or to watch Peahi / Jaws break when it was breaking) and they would be full of old burned out cars, sometimes a new one would block the route we took yesterday.

The explanation I was given - at the time - was that the ONLY junkyard on Maui was closed due to EPA/environmental/OSHA/who knows violations. So... you can see where bureaucracy got involved and probably made things worse. But the other guy here who said basically that it’s cheaper/easier to torch a junk car than to bring it to a junkyard? That’s essentially what’s going on.

Years ago, on a family vacation in the early ‘80s, we took a day-long tour of all of the islands. We stopped for lunch at Kalaupapa, on the north side of Molokai, the site of the famous leper colony. As we drove from the airport to the lunch site we passed by a completely rotted-out, early ‘70s Chrysler wagon, You couldn’t tell the paint color because it was all rust. There really weren’t any body panels left, and you could see right through to the skeleton of the vehicle. No floorboards to speak of either.

Whilst eating lunch I began to ponder how many years that old wagon, which wouldn’t have been older than 10 or 12 years old, had been sitting along the side of the road, abandoned and unwanted. Then it drove past our lunch site...
