Terrified of the upcoming era of Trump? Boycott the Inauguration (Media Blackout)

If there’s one thing egotistical narcissists hate... it’s being ignored. The best way to combat the upcoming Trump administration, today, is to ensure the ratings are terrible when the media fawns and sucks up to get preferential access.

Mass media is hanging by a thread right now— if it becomes essentially state run our democracy is done for. There’s a real threat of that happening if the press decides the best way to ratings is pandering to a bullying administration. Don’t support that which you fear just because the TV and Internet are sure to be filled with it today.

Catch up on Netflix. Read a book. Go for a long cruise on a mountain road. Gather some friends and drink yourself into a stupor while playing card games. Ignore the physical manifestation of your racist uncle’s facebook page, if just for today.

That’s the way I’ve been feeling since about a year ago. Don’t feed the troll.

I’m personally excited that investigative journalism is cool again

It’s so liberating to cut the cable because then these events just become one more random news item for the day. I don’t miss AT ALL being force-fed news stories by major outlets simply because they want to keep up with the ratings of everyone else. Every day has 24 hours, but not every day has 24 hours worth of news.

It was patently insane to see the MSM cover his campaign stump speeches in their entirety on a daily basis, while the rest of the Republican field got about 30 minutes, Clinton got about 15 minutes of coverage a day, and Sanders 30-90 seconds.

It suddenly made a lot more sense after the Clinton campaign hacks revealed that her campaign had *asked* “friendly” hosts on CNN and MSNBC to cover him more extensively because they *wanted* him to win the RNC primary, thinking he’d be the easiest for her to beat. It’s infuriating-- not only did the Clinton camp run a terrible campaign; they spurred the insane coverage that led to him getting wall-to-wall coverage and basically pushed him into the White House.

We had 24 hours of news when we still had a Speed channel :(

Definitely cool-- as to whether MSM will actually fund their reporters doing extensive investigative journalism-- not so sure of that. The newspapers used to do it but they’re all in attrition mode, and I’m not sure who really has to budget to do a Watergate type investigation and expose any more...

Steak dinner at my uncles, then overnight party at my cousins. Should be a fun weekend. And I’m at work now so no TV access.

Luckily, 23-year-old bloggers are cheap

Worse is the “reddit investigations”... blogger sites seem to have devolved into little more than op-ed pieces for the most part. Mother Jones had some cool investigative stuff for a while, Rachel Maddow used to do some of it... but it seems like hacks and leaks are leading to the biggest news investigations lately. We’ve definitely entered the digital information era, and leaked communications are driving the news more than the news is driving the leaks, imo.

This is my approach today. I refuse to visit facebook. I will not even turn on NPR or go to CNN.com or really engage with any form of media. Oppo is pushing my limits of engagement with the outside world by even bringing up the inauguration today.

I know I have power as an individual. I’ve been raised in a country that makes me truly believe that. But to make a difference on a large scale, as an individual, requires enormous personal sacrifices which I’m not willing to make at a stage in my life where I have a wife, a house, a dog, a steady job, and two amazing little kids. So... I choose not to participate for now, at least for today. I’ll swallow this and try to stay reasonably informed as a citizen and I’ll be sure to vote in the next election.

For today I had a beer with my lunch and I’m just counting down the minutes until I can be with my kids again at 3:00. I will hug them and continue with my day. Tonight I’m going to see some live music with my wife. It will be a good day in my little world.

That’s a good approach— hope the day goes well! What show are you going to? I was able to score some last minute tickets to go see Run the Jewels last night myself, but everything in my area (I’m about 15 mins from DC) is sold out tonight. Too bad... “The National” is playing a “free” show tonight with Common and I’ve always wanted to check them out live, but the venue gave all the tickets out to women’s charity organizations, which seem to have just given all the tickets to their internal membership (at least nobody ever figured out how to get tickets...). Another time-- luckily almost every major act makes it through DC on their tours.

I was planning on watching it, but ended up not. I caught 15 seconds of post-inauguration PBS coverage on Twitter and it was absolutely enraging. It was these two women talking about “Oh I liked how he talked about bringing people together and Democrats and Republicans working together” HAVE YOU LEARNED NOTHING, PEOPLE?

I can’t wait to see how he tweets about his ratings being rigged.
