Well...I’ve done it again. Finally fixed the blown up Subaru STi I bought and got bored. So I bought the cheapest motorcycle on Craigslist which also happens to be the same relatively unknown bike I owned through college which also happens to be the bike Luc stumbled across some time ago.

I treated myself to a cheap lift table to make things easier. It’s amazing. The bike is a 1982 Yamaha XZ550RJ Vision. It was actually fairly ahead of it’s time but had some issues and is now viewed as bit of an oddball.

So far I’ve:

Removed the ignition cylinder to try and find a locksmith to cut a key for it

Ordered multiple petcocks from different bikes in hoping I can make one that works better and has readily available parts

Found a series of holes in the fuel tank patched with JB Weld. Will be grinding that off and welding it up properly.

Broken down the carbs and begun cleaning. I’m experimenting w/ cutting gaskets using a Cricket (it’s some thing for cutting paper my wife uses for crafts)

Suffered multiple swings of buyer’s remorse and new project euphoria

I’ll let you know how it goes. (Probably not well.) Still haven’t found its fatal flaw that lead it to be parked. :/

And your wife is okay with you using the Cricut machine for this? Be careful or you might be out the $200 for a new one.

That lift is nearly the greatest thing ever. I have done everything from wheel changes on a GL1800 all the way to using it as a chop saw table. It’s great cause its sturdy, then you can just park on top of it. Good purchase. Did you get the foot pump or air over hydro?

I need to know more about that resurrected STi

Well...typical Subaru story I suppose. Spun a bearing and had bad rod knock. I bought it that way and replaced the short block and ended up replacing nearly everything oil touched. Repainted the front and rear bumpers and now I have a nearly pristine ‘07 STi for around 9k. 7/10 would do it again!

Yes. No. I’m not sure yet. She is ok with me figuring out how to cut shapes from CAD files but I haven’t really brought up the gasket idea yet. I will be buying some extra blades and trying it out on materials of increasing resistance (paper, cardstock, multiple sheets, etc) and check how much of a load it puts on the machine. If all goes well, I will probably try scoring a gasket material first.

It’s amazing what a couple feet of height does for you! I got tired of working on the concrete floor in freezing temperatures.

Just the foot pump. Current plan is to get a little more complex of a system if that jack craps out.

That’s what I said too, then 10ish uears later mine still preforms like new. Keep the pivot points lubed and keep the whole thing dry and it will last for a good while. My only complaint is the paint peeling on the top deck. I have thought about bed lining itbut haven’t found the gumption.

Not gonna lie. I had that exact same dream. Except a white ‘07 STi.

I imagine the sound rod bearing was due to someone thinking they could add some mods and get away with not tuning it?

SWEET BABY JEEBUS!!! You found one! The holes in the tank were and extremely common problem on those.

Another issue is the carbs would suck up any little junk then it would run not so well. I ran my bike out of fuel once and had to lean the bike over to get the fuel to cross over to the other side so I could make it to a gas station 5 miles down the road and the bike sucked up some of the crud in the bottom of the tank and ran not so great ever since. Don’t let the bike run out. It is good for 170kms(~100 miles) on a tank tops. So once you are near 80-90 miles fill her up.

Yeah I’ve actually heard of that fueling issue happening. Cleaning the carbs out now...hopefully she will start up when I put it all back together!
