I recently dug myself into a hole volunteered myself to build a table. As part of earning my architectural licence I need to do community service. In my arch. office we are redoing a kitchen for a food pantry where they will hold nutrition and cooking lessons for kids 12+. I’m trying to get home depot to donate the materials so all items need to be available there.

the table is shaped the way it is so that it can be stored against a curved wall when not in use but still allow space to get around it when in use. I was thinking cedar 4x4 posts and cedar 2x4 horizontal bracing with 1x1 for a storage area under.

I’m not exactly a furniture builder but i’m pretty capable with a hammer. My best thought right now is to use 6" lag bolts thru the 4x4 posts into the horizontal supports (2x4's) but i’m not sure if that will hold together well enough to absorb the abuse of 12 y/o’s.

Having just built a dining room table for my wife and I, here are some thoughts:

Build it far heavier duty than you think, and bigger. And because it involves kids, assume everything will be thrown onto that storage rack and not set on it. I did 4x4's for legs and a central runner, 2x10s for top and bracing.

Mortise and tenon those joints, also ceder is a very soft wood, would not recommend, see if you can find some oak, maple, or ash.

Have you considered using a pocket hole connection to join the 2x4s to the 4x4s? They look like this except in your case they would be centered on the top and bottom of the 2x4 instead of the face and screw into the center of the post. They would be hidden from view by the table top on the top and on the bottom by being on the under side of the 2x4. Or alternatively you could screw them in from the back of the 2x4, but that may not offer you as much strength. Also you wouldn’t have the lag bolt heads showing on the outside of the posts. I use them a lot for deck and fence building, creates a nice clean look.

Those lags should hold up fine, I’d probably put the 2x4 on the outside of the 4x4. Just so you can put the lags straight through 2x4 into 4x4. Cut a 45deg angle on the ends of 2x4 so they mate nicely. You could do an inner and outer 2x4 if you’re really worried.

i think my only options are cedar or douglas fir

that came out pretty good. the table top will be done by who ever does the counters so it matches. how did you hold everything together.

yea, thats probably a better idea. I know screwing into the end grain isn’t the strongest method but I liked how it was going to look.

If you’re attached to that look then Highlanders Joint would be the way to go.

Put a 2x4" across the top of my 4x4" legs and screwed from the underside into the bottom of the table top

pocket holes was one option I was thinking of but am concerned of the strength. I also dont mind the lags showing, I was thinking of painting them a contrasting color to add some interesting detail to it.

Drop cloth is my friend, heated sun room so that I could keep everything warm while staining.

Side note 6" lags are too long. 3" would be fine, and won’t hit each other if you do screw the 2x4 to the outside on the center line of the 4x4.

Fir is stonger than ceder but it can be pitchy and splintery.

3" lags wouldn’t make it thru the 4x4 into the 2x4. 6" would allow for 2.5" to be imbedded into the 2x4

I was talking if you put the 2x4 on the outside of 4x4. I see what you meant originally now.
