My father’s A110 is around 140hp for 700kg. It’s a great combination. My car is around 185hp for 950kg... It’s pretty good too.

I guess, ideally, I would go a bit over that and say 190hp for 800kg would be perfect.

My ‘88 Peugeot 205 GTi 1.6 weighs about the same. It’s got 105 hp, which is absolutely enough to make it fun. This does depend on the engine and its characteristics (and chassis), this engine turns my car into something that acts like a very eager puppy. I’d get something with maybe 130-150 hp tops. Maybe a Honda VTEC or some kind Saab turbo 4 from the 90s or so?

I doubt the 1960s FWD chassis will be comfortable with a lot of power anyway, I assume you want this car to be a great driver and not some kind of torque steering monster that’s fast in theory but horrible to actually drive.

What you’re basically saying is, ‘I don’t want a car with ~300bhp/ton’.

And to be honest that makes sense, since anything above 250bhp/ton becomes a bit too wild for daily driving. The 205 1.9 GTi weighed around 875kg and only had 126bhp - but it is still one of the most fun cars you can drive today.

Basically, reasons like this are why Miata is always the answer.
