Some guy decided to do some loops near Federation Square in the CBD, before running down 20 or so pedestrians.

Kinja'd!!!

I work in the city and was out for lunch right nearby when it all happened. Got a warning from my boss and hurried back to work, city was chaos, police everywhere, Bourke Street in lockdown. It was a few hours ago now, Bourke Street still looks to be locked down. I’m 1 street south.

Kinja'd!!!

Sounds like police eventually shot the guy.

Central Business District. The heart of the city.

Is that term not used in America!?

Not that I’m aware of. I think we would just call it “downtown.”

The driver was arrested - and sounds more like he is just a murderous asshole than any other motivation.

Hard to imagine what the motivation could possibly be.

Haha! Like the song!

I never fully understood “Downtown”. “Down” could be North, East, any direction.

As far as I know it was a New York thing (they have an uptown too) and spread from there.

Sorry to hear that. That part of Bourke is extremely crowded, especially around Myers. Is that where he drove into?

Edit: Didn’t read. Federation square. Still very crowded area. Thoughts and prayers for the families, especially the ones with children.

You’re talking about the Bourke Street pedestrian mall where the road is closed to cars. It sounds like he went from the square down Swanston and then through the mall past Myers. So yeah.

Edit:

I don’t think they use CBD in Britain, either. Maybe the equivalent of a “High Street”, which came from when most towns had a specific street where commercial shops were concentrated. It now is used generally for any concentrated commercial district.

I’ve always taken it for granted! I wonder where it came from, if not England?

driver will claim he was on ICE/Meth guaranteed.

i know this is irrelevant given the situation but the Commodore is a series one VS.

Ever since I typed VR I’ve had this fear that it might be a VS, and someone like you might come and tell me how wrong I am.

I’m pretty good with them, but VN and VP always confused me, as do VR and VS. I just don’t know how to tell.

vr door/bumper moulds were plain black

vs door/bumper moulds were black with grey stripe

vr has no engine badge under side repeater

vs has ‘Ecotec V6 or supercharged V6'

also looking on nine.com.au site it shows the left hand side of the car VR commodore had a key barrel in left front door whereas VS didn’t (except for series one utes)

In London there are Financial Districts. The City (aka The Square Mile*) and Canary Wharf. Business Districts aren’t a formal term used here but sometimes used to defined similar such areas around the world.

The name the square mile comes from the old defined rule of a city being a square mile.

I never fully understood “Downtown”. “Down” could be North, East, any direction.

Perhaps the term comes from the days when town centers tended to be developed in valleys, around the streams and rivers that powered the factories (and were means for transporting goods).

In Somerset County, Pennsylvania, the county seat is the highest point in the county and located in Somerset City and my grandmother would refer to the city center as “uptown.”
