Kinja'd!!!

Educate me on everything (engine problems, drivetrains, which are best or worse EVERYTHING) on Mercury Mountaineers, preferably the generation that has 2003 with it. Thank you!

Single overhead cam 4.0L V6 is prone to timing chain guide failure. It also has 4 timing chains. Its also a Ford so don’t expect the 4 speed auto to last forever.

Why does I need 4 timing chains? Who designed this?

I assume it’s the 4.0 SOHC, I had a 1997 and my sister had a 2002. All the sensors went to shit in my 97. The fuel pump died in my sisters and the rear diff in hers needed to be replaced twice.

Pretty sure by then they had 5 speeds, my 1997 had a 5 speed.

Does that have anything to do with smoke coming from the hood you think? Or would it be something else? Just wondering

V8s are generally pretty bullet proof, it’s a i believe valve 4.6 mod engine. 5 speed is kinda meh if you don’t take care of it but other wise other than eating through wheel bearings like they’re gas it’s pretty good vehicle.

It’s a tarted up Ford Explorer, so you can also research those. Since Mercury is a dead brand and these were far less common, they should be cheaper and a little harder to find info on, so just search for the Explorer, as those were/are super common.

Don’t get the V6! My family has one, and 210 horsepower is not enough. And it doesn’t even make up for it by being economical. It averages 14 MPG on a good day.

My grandparents had one, I wrenched on it when I was around it and it needed it. Theirs was theV6. I wish they had gotten the V8 (this generation was the first for the modular motor, prior to this is was the 5.0L OHV) Nothing out of the ordinary for engine and drivetrain issues. Plastic was of a deteriorating quality that would crack a little too easily. Luckily they had a popular color and junkyards had plenty of parts.

My friend has the V8 thankfully, but thanks for the info! They might possibly have to buy a new car now so...
